But, you should not underutilize your car battery by only making short trips. Also, you shouldn’t draw too much power from the battery. So, you should not use car gadgets for long if the engine is not running.

The black colored surface on the battery terminal is caused when a battery releases hydrogen as it charges and discharges. This creates a lead oxide that will eventually build up enough to create a low current path to ground that may eventually cause it not to transmit power properly. Chances are that if the terminal is turning black like this, your battery will soon be going dead as well. I would recommend having the battery tested to see if it still maintains the proper amount of power.

This could also be caused by a bad ground (negative bat cable, engine grounding strap, old wire getting weak and causing a short to ground).
In this case it sounds like something is not making a good ground connection. Has the starter, battery cable, or wiring of some kind been recently replaced (since you started noticing the problem)?
