Traditional speed boat engines use a battery to kick start the engine and power boat accessories. A Yamaha two stroke engine with a 50 or below horsepower uses a battery that contains 245 cold cranking amps at zero degrees Fahrenheit and 323 marine ranking amps at 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

A two stroke Yamaha engine between 60 and 150 horsepower and a 2.6 liter 150 to 2000 horsepower outboard engine requires a motor battery that has 380 cold cranking amps at zero degrees Fahrenheit. At 32 degrees Fahrenheit there should be 502 marine cranking amps with a reserve of 124 capacity minutes at 25 amps. While checking out the battery on a two stroke, be sure to also examine the oil levels and top up with Yamalube 2-m oil if necessary. here

As I understand it, there are times when the motor is using the reserve battery power to run. This is probably, when at low RPMs, the engine is using more electrical power that it makes. That’s when the 220 reserve capacity come into play. I’m no expert, so feel free to correct me.

Having said that, many people do use them and say they are fine. I, personally, would not for a variety of reasons. First, they are way too expensive on a cost per unit time basis. Second, the perceived advantages (other than lasting longer) do not justify the hugely more expensive costs. Third, the right battery is usually far less available, which can be an issue down the road - and seems to be the situation you find yourself in. [links]

Dual purpose battery is more of a marketing thing, to go after particular usage scenarios that fit some boater's needs better. But I have never seen them required or recommended by anyone. In general, many people with CC fishing boats go with two batteries, one a starting battery tied to the motor and one a deep cycle battery tied to the house circuits. This tailors each battery type to its usage. To properly charge and manage both batteries, get a dual pole battery switch and auto-charging relay, or take advantage of dual charging circuits some motors have (Yamaha F150 and up include this standard, I believe). more

Battery Ratings Note: These are minimum engine specifications. Additional electrical loads from the boat will require larger batteries.

An AGM battery is a lead acid battery. For the most part, their charging rates are the same as flooded lead acid batteries. Many, many Yamaha owners are using AGM batteries with no problems whatsoever. more

Finally, after years and years of mandating batteries with certain Reserve Capacity requirements, Yamaha is now saying they did not really mean it. The RC requirements for some motors have been lowered. [links]

I was considering an Optima Marine battery for replacing the start battery on my boat. Why wet cell only?? Seems misleading to sell a Marine battery if you can't use it.

What next about which will they be saying "we did not really mean what we were saying before"?
