Wrap an couple of old towels around the jaws of your bench vise to hold the lower unit while you work. Tilt your motor up with the tilt control, just like you do when you trailer the boat. Disconnect the boat's battery cables to avoid an accident. Remove the two or three nuts on each side of lower part of the motor that keep the lower unit in place, using a box-end wrench.

Slide the lower unit straight out of the motor. The driveshaft and the shift shaft will come along, since they're attached to the lower unit, and a water tube will pull free of the water outlet as well. Take care not to bump the driveshaft or shift shaft and ignore the water tube. Set the unit upright in the vise and close the jaws just enough to hold the unit in place.

Slide the pump housing, the first part you removed, down the driveshaft and line it up with the bolt holes on the top of the lower unit. Smear some thread locker on the bolts and thread them back through the housing and into the lower unit. Tighten them to 60 inch-pounds with a torque wrench. here

I?m replacing the impeller on my 2000 40hp Mercury. I ran into some kelp over the weekend and the motor quit pissing well. I bought the motor used a few months ago and figured its a good idea to replace the impeller anyway so tonight I took it apart.

There is what looks like tar that was used as gasket sealer. Not sure what the stuff is but its sticky and messy. My question is should I use gasket sealer or is this black tar stuff the right thing to use and if so what is it? The Impeller looks ok but one of the blades looks like it was in going in the reveres direction (see pic) here

I cleaned up the plate and housing and the new kit is on the way in the mail. Any pointers or recommendations on the gasket sealer use would be great.

Japanese-built Mariner serial numbers are in the format ###-x-###### (example:. 6A1-L-123456 )
Using the table below in the example you would look under " 6A1 " serial number code.
When specified, the serial number in the example would be " 123456 ". here

What you described is exactly what I need to know. You mentioned manual. I already bought 1 manual and 2 videos but none is identical to my middle unit. What manual are you using? Please give details on where to buy. Is that the Mercury ($70+) manual or Seloc ($30+)? There is a Seloc online manual where I can subscribe. more

I have 1999 40 Force as well. I will try to help from memory but you should have a manual.
