If you do need to replace them all, they can be somewhat pricey. It is possible to isolate which coil pack is bad by using a multimeter. Here’s a great YouTube video on how to do just that. This can save you a lot of money over just replacing the whole set at one time.
There are also non ignition related circumstances that can cause a misfire. That would include lack of fuel pressure, bad fuel injectors, or even a timing chain (or belt) that has jumped. Since there are so many reasons that a vehicle can misfire, we recommend testing for trouble codes first.
Bad Coil Packs are one of the more problematic ignition issues that can occur with the Chevy Blazer. A bad oil pack can make your Blazer almost un-drivable. Or it may have little effect at all on the engine’s ability to run. It’ll get worse as they lose their ability to fire the spark plugs.
Fill up with gas and make sure the gas cap is on tight(I make sure to click 3 times.) After you drive for about 20 miles with the full tank and a tight gas cap the pressure in the tank will shut off the check ingine light. The pressure in the tank can drop after appox. 1/2 tank of gas and the check ingine light will come on. here
You can also unplug your battery for 30 min. to reprogram your computer after you have tightend you gas cap and it should stay off if that is your problem. here
There are many things that can cause the P0420 trouble code in your Blazer. Here are the most common ones.
Unless you have an exhaust leak, you’ll probably need to test the O2 sensors and/or catalytic converters. Here are a couple of good guides to help with that.
Your Blazer has at least two oxygen sensors, one before and after the catalytic converter. Among the many jobs that oxygen sensors have is they have to measure the emissions levels coming in and out of the converter. more
