The biggest benefit of shrink wrapping is the protection it provides during the winter, allowing you to safely get through the next boating season. Additionally, it requires little to no maintenance once installed. Manufacturers produce a variety of colors, sizes, and widths to ensure your boat is properly safeguarded. more

The one downside to shrink wrapping is the cost. This type of winter maintenance technique is expensive and can cost a few hundred dollars for a small boat and more for larger boats. On the other hand, you can purchase a tarp at most hardware stores for a fraction of the cost. Keep in mind that while many boaters do use a tarp as protection, this method does not provide anywhere near the same level of protection. We also highly recommend having a professional shrink wrap your boat over using tarp. [links]

All boats that are shrink wrapped for winter require some degree of ventilation. The color of the shrink wrap (white, blue, or clear) will determine how much ventilation is needed. The amount of ventilation required is determined by the boat type and the weather conditions in your specific area.

To help complete the task at hand, shrink wrap tape from Shrinkwrap International is used during the process to patch holes and help secure zipper doors and tape up seams. It can be purchased in blue or white to coordinate with your shrink wrap color. Boat shrink wrapping can be a big task and your family crafting heat gun may not be enough to get the job done. Invest in the Big Red Shrink Wrap Gun. This heat gun heats the shrink wrap in a professional uniform manner for a tighter seal. Wholesale Marine also carries a 48” or 36” Zippered Shrink Wrap door which allows you to access your boat while it is “under wraps”.

Arming yourself with the appropriate amount of boat shrink wrap and a heat gun will make the task at hand go smooth. However, our boating pros recommend additional tools to help ensure your boat is protected throughout the winter months. Providing ventilation is a key step in this process and ensures that any moisture left has a way to circulate and escape. Shrinkwrap International carries a shrink wrap vent just for this purpose. Taping all your fuel vents is an additional step to protect your boat during the shrinking process. This will prevent off-gases during the heating process of sealing your boat. Once the boat shrink wrap is installed the tape should be removed for additional ventilation.

To choose the correct boat wrap film width size, you will need to measure down about 8" or more from the top of one side of your boat to get your starting point, then measure up and over the width of the boat including everything that will be shrink wrapped and down the other side of the boat about 8" or more. For further instructions on boat wrapping see our Quick Guide. After figuring out your boat measurement, you can match it to the closest width size roll of 7 mil heat shrink wrap. Either way is fine with us, mast down is quite a bit easier so plan on a ten percent discount if yours is stepped but with our experience on the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays for over 25 years, we've got our process down pretty good if we do say so ourselves. Add a re-usable zipper door and let us know if you have a painted hull so we can prepare accordingly to wrap it the right way.
