Attendees pay for their own travel to Sicily, but then Google foots the bill for everything at the opulent Verdura Resort, which reportedly features two golf courses and where rooms start at $903 a night.
The billionaire creators of Google have invited a who’s who of A-list names— including former President Barack Obama, Prince Harry, Leonardo DiCaprio and Katy Perry — to the Sicilian seaside for a mega-party they’ve dubbed Google Camp.
The three-day event will focus on fighting climate change — though it’s unknown how much time the attendees will spend discussing their own effect on the environment, such as the scores of private jets they arrived in and the mega yachts many have been staying on.
DiCaprio has described climate change as the biggest threat to future generations; he has shown his dedication to the topic by creating his own Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation to address pressing environmental issues. more
But there is the question of whether these very rich, powerful and famous people will address their own significant impact on the environment, the New York Post said. Both the Post and Dobson have described Google Camp guests making their way to the Verdura Resort in private jets and yachts. more
Page and Brin founded the camp in 2012 as their own private version of the World Economic Forum, where the world’s most powerful business leaders exchange ideas, the Observer reported. Google will spend an estimated $20 million to host this year’s summit, the Post said. [links]
As for the jets, the Post cited Italian media reports to say that attendees were expected to arrive in 114 private planes. The Institute for Policy Studies, a Washington D.C.-based think tank dedicated to climate justice and equitable societies, estimated in a 2017 report that a single private jet trip burns more greenhouse gases than the average American does in a whole year. here
“Google Camp is meant to be a place where influential people get together to discuss how to make the world better,” a source told the Post. “There will likely be discussions about online privacy, politics, human rights, and of course, the environment, which makes it highly ironic that this event requires 114 private jets to happen.” [links]

Other stars in attendance will be Perry's fiancee Orlando Bloom, singer Harry Styles, Bradley Cooper, Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra, Gayle King, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, designer Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller. Furstenberg and Diller reportedly arrived via their $200 million yacht Eos; Dreamworks founder David Geffen is said to have given Perry and Bloom a lift to the event on his $400 million yacht, Rising Sun.
Google Camp is hosting the likes of former President Barack Obama, Prince Harry, Leonardo DiCaprio and Katy Perry in Sicily, Italy, to discuss climate change, but it may come at a steep cost to Mother Earth.
