One of the tasks on board that may polarise Clipper Race Crew, is the need to ascend the lofty heights of the mast. Some thrill seekers on board will jump…

Londonderry is known as the Gateway to the Northwest and is famous for the dramatic land and seascapes within its hinterland, many of which have been the backdrop to films and tv shows including Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Game of Thrones. The region also features several championship golf courses and the Giants Causeway UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Londonderry will be celebrating Walls 400, to celebrate 400 years since the completion of the walls, until March 2020. A walk of the walls is a must-do for any visit to Derry [links]

Northern Ireland’s ‘Festival City’ is a hub of culture, optimism, and creativity. The lively pubs and exciting live-music scene makes Derry here

Londonderry is one of the most-anticipated Stopovers on the race, with the many lively pubs, exciting live-music scene, and plenty of 'craic’ delighting crews for the last four editions. But what makes Derry

The temperature continues to rise. On starboard watch this morning a new role was established in addition to trimmer, grinder, winch button attendant and helm. The new much sought after role is 'in the shade of the bimini'. [links]

Doire continues to make good progress through an area of lightish winds. This makes for night watches of constant sail trimming with the accompanying crunching and clanking of the grinders (luckily the off watches seem to manage to tune this annoyance out!)

Theses past couple of days have brought changes above deck - there has been an outbreak of shorts - washing is festooning the guard rail, and the bimini (sun shade) has been rigged over the helm area. During night watches the crew have been passing time by singing ( Who knew that round the world crew member Mike Gaskin had shared the same stage with Michael Ball or that Deio Jones performed with Cliff Richard. ) more

This morning we saw our first squadron of flying fish skimming past us sensibly hugging the water so as to escape our deck and the frying pan. We were later briefly visited by a group of spotted dolphins who rode our bow wave. We have been really privileged to have seen so much wildlife out here in the Atlantic. Yesterday we saw various groups of dolphins (spotted, common and bottle nosed), groups of pilot whales, and a larger unidentified cetacean some 500 metres off our port.

Masefield's descriptions all sound very familiar to me. For example, on deck this morning at 02:00, the helmsman looked ahead at the misty sky and muttered: 'Great - I have a star directly in front of the forestay to aim at'. As the weather conditions deteriorated later in the day, I can report that the wheel was DEFINITELY kicking and, as CV25 was occasionally being pushed up to windward by the larger waves, the white sails were indeed shaking. more

Team Dare To Lead is currently off the SW corner of the Emerald Isle, facing the rising onslaught of wind and waves. Earlier we changed down from the Yankee 1 (our largest working headsail), via the Yankee 2, to our smallest working headsail, the Yankee 3. A reef has been pulled down in the mainsail, in readiness for the heavy weather that is surely coming. But we are now 'going home to Liverpool' and there is a special energy on board the boat: our long voyage will soon be over and life is certainly about to change.
