Now that you have it starting on the port battery, it might be a good idea to have both batteries load tested to see if replacement is warranted. If one is weak and they are the same age, consider replacing both.

I could explain the WHOLE process I went through, here, but a video does a better job (pictures AND words. what a novel idea). more
I have a 2001 Evinrude 115hp FICT V4 engine with a reduction gear starter.
It has been having problems starting on the port battery.
I cleaned and reset all of the connections, made sure the battery was fully charged (even swapped batteries), but the starter drive (bendix) won't engage into the flywheel, and it just spins. It works fine on the starboard battery.
I have read that the bendix may need to be lubricated, some other publications say it doesn't.
If the starter isn’t spinning the flywheel quite fast enough, the engine might try to start and push the starter gear back down without starting and running. Could be a weak or dirty starter, weak battery or dirty/loose connections, or motor ignition or timing issues. It can be hard to diagnose. more
I’m not sure how hard it is to get a ficht repair manual, but it would be a good idea to find out how to remove the starter, then open and at least clean it up — maybe replace brushes. (Maybe there is a hidden mounting bolt coming in through the front.) here
Any way I could have over seated the flywheel?
I have had it open about 6 times. The pawls are both springy and operate cleanly. I can see the clutch and clutch drum spin, but only sometimes. I am wondering it I somehow seated the flywheel too deeply on the shaft and now the pawls are not reaching into the sprocket to turn the flywheel.
Sounds like you might have the starter rope round up on the spool the wrong way.Hope this helps. here

The pull cord on my Champion Vantage 35 petrol lawnmower is not engaging when pulled.
If by "not engaging" you mean the fly wheel turns but does not turn the motor, the trip dogs on the fly wheel are either jammed or broken. Normally when you pull the starter cord on a lawn mower or ther small engine, two or four metal flanges, sometimes called trip dogs, extend from the center axle asembly of the fly wheel to engage the motor and turn it. If the cord is pulling freely and retracting as it should, but just not turning the motor, then your problem is almost certainly with the dogs. Remove the fly wheel assembly and examine the dogs. Try turing the wheel in the starting direction to see if they extend. If they are broken or corroded, it is probably best to replace the entire fly wheel assembly. If you do want to replace the dogs (assuming the axle assembly can be opened, usually it is sealed), take care not to damage the recoil spring, which is also inside the axle assembly. more
