Covering a boat involves a few steps that need to be followed carefully. more

If you observe carefully, you can see that there are many low spots on your boat. If you’re using a flat tarp, it will not spread out evenly on your boat. There will be some low dips on it. This is not something you need to worry about if there’s no rain or snow.

All you need to make sure is that you’re tying the tarp securely and adequately. Make sure the sharp edges are covered, and no low spot is made. Keep the tarp tied up after the set up with heavy material or against the grommet.

Don't confuse 'water proof' with 'water repellent', they're not the same. Carver makes a good cover with a 5 yr warranty, but they don't sell retail. I bought mine from an I-Boats vendor, but there are other sources .

In the humidity we have here a plastic tarp is a bad idea. It can't breathe and condensation forms under it which promotes mold, mildew and corrosion. A canvas sailcloth tarp would be OK but is probably going to cost the majority of what a fitted cover is going to cost. more

Anyway, thanks for all the ideas. Sounds like a tarp would do OK, if I end up buying a fitted cover I'll make sure it comes with a good warranty. I'm leaning towards a fitted cover after hearing everyone's advice. If I have to spray it with water proofing every year thats fine. I think the idea that it breathes better than a tarp might save me some trouble in the future. [links]

Sounds like the only drawback to a fitted cover is the cost, and the idea that it may break down over time. I'll just make sure I buy a good one, with a decent warranty and hope for the best. [links]

since you already have a cover over the delicate parts, why cover the rest? Fiberglass cleans up easily (easier than mold/mildew inside) and you're not in an area were freeznig and snow is an issue. A good storm will blow it away.

With heavy-duty tarps for boats from Canopies and Tarps, you can keep your watercraft seaworthy season after season.

You already know how expensive boats can get. Even a simple watercraft such as a canoe or kayak can carry surprising extra costs. Maybe you have a bigger boat that requires storage on a trailer. Or maybe you have an even bigger boat that requires docking.

Stretch it out and lash it down tight enough to resist something you'll find in all forms of weather - wind. (Strong breezes and bodies of water go hand in hand.) There are several ways to do this - and most of them take advantage of the regularly spaced grommets you'll find on our waterproof tarps. Here's two methods to consider: [links]

Think in three dimensions when you take your measurements. A straight across measurement may not give you enough slack for proper securing. Take into account any protrusions, whether it's a canopy, windshield or outboard engine. Once you have that, add an extra foot to your estimate. As for color, most boat owners go with a shade of blue, but we'd recommend any color that's not black or very dark. You want to reflect sunlight, not absorb it. more
