Never sand a teak deck as part of routine maintenance. One of the beauties of teak is its non-slip quality. The grain of teak has softer and harder lines so the soft ones wear out leaving the hard ones as a perfect non-slip surface. Sanding to provide a slick pretty surface not only ruins the non-slip quality but the soft spots will wear out quickly and require re-sanding. Sanding reduces the depth of the caulking grooves, increasing the chance for a leak, and eventually requiring re-grooving.

The methods of teak deck laying are either traditional; in re-laying the deck plank by plank…. or replacing teak decks in a prefabricated form. Traditional methods are usually employed where decks are sweeping and clear. Planks of teak are laid side by side and sprung one against the other…. as they converge on a central king plank.

TDS Deck Sealant is a one-part, paste-like neutral cure system which, when exposed to moisture in the air, reacts to form a tough, flexible, solid rubber compound. The sealant is a thixotropic material, which does not sag during cure and when cured, has excellent temperature stability and chemical resistance. Because the sealant is neutral cure, it is non-corrosive to all substrates. TDS Teak Caulking is available in black, white, or grey. It is easily sanded and does not require a seam primer which cuts down the prep work. However, the teak seam to be caulked must be completely free from dust before the caulking is applied. Old caulking can be removed with a razor knife and reefing hook or a router, even a grinder if the operator is skilled. Before caulking, removing any old caulk and sand the wood on the sides of seams with a piece of 80-grit sandpaper to clean off any residue of the old caulking. Remove any debris in seams with a reefing hook, a brush and a vacuum or compressed air. Be sure that the compressed air system has traps for oil. more

The first is teak decking SIS 440. Having tried all the caulking compounds over years of repairing yacht decks, I can say that this caulking compound is reliable.

A company which has created the market in teak decks pre-formed and measured for yachts is ‘Teak Decking Systems’ along with many other prefab teak decking companies.

If one is repairing a deck in the open one should never apply caulking where there is any water residue. If water or moisture is present, cover the teak deck area to be caulked, and allow to dry. In some cases, this may take several week if the deck being repaired has voids underneath. For this reason, it is best to caulk under cover. If cover is not available during a re-seam, only open as much seam as can be cleaned and re-caulked without moisture getting into the seam as any residue water may ‘steam’ under the planks. more

Captain Lisa developed her love of sailing young, growing up near Lake Ontario, Canada. She always dreamed of being a salty pirate, sailing the world over. Her adventures brought her to Halifax, Nova Scotia at the age of 18 where she secured her first job working on a local tall ship. It wasn’t long before she went international, sailing through the Mediterranean and Caribbean, to learn, study and work her way towards becoming a Yachtmaster. There are few things she loves more than to share her enthusiasm for the sea, both above it and below with others through sailing, diving, educating, learning and experiencing.
