Do they sting?
Known to be aggressive defenders of their colonies, yellow jackets are otherwise not quick to sting. However, the sting of a yellow jacket is painful, and each insect is capable of delivering multiple stings. Because they are equipped with lance like stingers with small barbs, compared to the larger barbs in honey bees, yellow jackets are capable of stinging repeatedly.

Keeping yellow jackets out of your home is an ongoing process, not a one-time treatment. Orkin’s exclusive A.I.M. solution is a continuing cycle of three critical steps — Assess, Implement and Monitor. here

What do they look like?
Yellow jackets, genera Dolichovespula and Vespula, are wasps that can be identified by their alternating black and yellow body segments and small size.

No one, especially me, wants to get stung in the process of eliminating a yellow jacket nest. I have 4 kids and hate killing anything, however I have no qualms about killing wasps that could potentially harm my 4 small kids in my backyard.

I used a can of Spectracide Wasp and Hornet Killer. I am only posting to let you know this was wonderful! When you first spray it, it produces kind of a *cloud* of spray and then it becomes more direct and finally foams to fill the hole. The initial cloud knocks down all the hovering yellow jackets (included the dreaded warrior *alarm the hive* bee). then the rest eventually foams and fills the entire nest. here

Advantages:
-Good efficiency (lumens per watt)
-Smaller size than LPS or fluorescent, the HPS fits into many fixture types
-Can be retrofitted into older Mercury Vapor fixtures
-Better bulb life than LPS lamps
Disadvantages:
-Still has a bad color rendering compared to metal halide and halogen lamps
-Requires a lossy ballast (inefficient) that operates a low arc voltage of 52-100V. This reduces the actual efficiency of the lamp when you count the whole system together.

1932 - The first sodium lamps for commercial sale were made by Philips. Philips has not released the names of the individuals who did the monumental work of developing a reliable sodium lamp ready for widespread use. The first lamps had a removable outer jacket with a vacuum between glass to insulate the bulb to keep it hot enough to keep the sodium in vapor form.

Later developments include:

-Integrating the outer vacuum jacket as a bulb with the inner discharge tube inside, therefore eliminating the separate outer jacket and improving insulation properties.
