Private yacht jobs and jobs on charter yachts both offer crew a different experience, from the way the yacht is run to their cruising programme. The type of vessel you work on can even impact your earning potential.

You may have higher earning potential on a charter yacht, but you’ll find this likely comes at the sacrifice of having less time-off to enjoy. Charter yachts are often booked solid through-out the popular yachting seasons, giving crew very little time off. A busy charter will find crew working round the clock. However, with a private yacht job, you may enjoy a less hectic schedule as the yacht will only be active when the owner chooses. This often means the crew spends more time at dock where they will typically work a standard 9-5 day maintaining the yacht. here

Working as crew on both a charter yacht and private yacht offers the opportunity to travel the world. Typically charter yachts tend to be more limited in where they travel. They often cruise to popular yachting destinations for each season. For example, charter yachts are often based in the Caribbean for the winter and the Mediterranean in the summer. Private yachts go wherever the owner fancies, which means crew may have the opportunity to explore some of the world’s remote and least visited destinations, anywhere from Antarctica to the Galapagos Islands, if the yacht’s owner is adventurous. here

Just for fun, let’s consider what different functions this means a stew could, quite possibly, be asked to perform in a day… here

For example, first consider all of the various functions performed in the daily operation of a hotel, and who is responsible for them. There are employees to clean rooms; employees to do laundry; employees to give information and to arrange for transportation; employees to assist guests at any time of the day or night; employees to serve food and employees to prepare drinks in the restaurants, at the pool, and for room service.

Next, take that same hotel and toss it out in the middle of the ocean as though it were a cruise ship, cut off from the conveniences of being on land and having a lot of outside resources at your disposal. You must now add in employees to entertain; employees to perform in medical emergencies; employees to handle safety issues; and employees to coordinate activities, both onboard and ashore.

The 3rd Steward (ess) is under the management of the senior interior crew. On a small yacht this would be a more junior role but on a larger yacht with a big interior team this position could be quite senior, also if on a larger vessel you could either rotate through all areas of the interior or be allocated to housekeeping or service department. The role could consist of housekeeping, laundry and service such as cleaning and upkeep of the interior, both guest and crew areas. Providing guest turn-up, turndown service, laundry, ironing, stain removal, fabric care. Food and beverage service, depending on the vessel fine dining or silver service maybe required, bar tending, barista, flower arranging and plant care. Assisting the Chief stewardess with other duties such as provisioning of guest and crew items such as toiletries, towels and linens, logging inventory.

The Captain is the boss. “Aye aye, captain.” He is in charge of all the crew members atop the yacth as well as navigating the yatch. One of the job descriptions of the Captain is crew recruitment, and he is answerable only to the owner of the yacht.
The Captain must know all the yacht operations carried out in the different departments. Also, he should have the necessary nautical skills needed to navigate the yacht. Possessing leadership and communication skills is a must. more
