Those who think of Riesling as light, delicate, and sweet have probably never experienced the Rieslings of Alsace. A sunny, dry region located on France’s border with Germany, Alsace is known for white wines. Its Rieslings often marry the opulence of all that sunshine with taut acidity and intense minerality. While some Alsatian Rieslings have residual sugar, most are dry and become even more layered over time. In the mood for a bright refresher but have a friend who thinks that everything lighter than a California Chardonnay is thin? Alsatian Riesling is a game-changer. more

While these individuals point with pride as to why their wines are superior, at least one producer I spoke with was a bit more politically correct in his response regarding the differences in these offerings; as Egon Müller IV admitted: "Some of the greatest Rieslings I have enjoyed were from Alsace." Of course, there are regional variations within Germany and Alsace; Riesling from the Mosel has a completely different character than one from the Rheingau or Pfalz while, in Alsace, a Riesling blended from several sites is vastly diverse from a Grand Cru offering. But in general, there are some important dissimilarities between German and Alsatian Riesling; factors include climate, terroir, winemaking decisions and stylistic philosophy.

So if you wanted to serve heavy apps with your tasting, play up this angle! You could serve some steamed dumplings from your local Chinese place, order up some beef or chicken satay skewers from your favorite Thai restaurant, and/or put out some samosas from a local Indian restaurant. Of course, German wines will complement German foods as well, so sliced bratwurst or kielbasa with toothpicks would make a great theme-appropriate finger food for this event. [links]

The wines in the blind tasting above range from $10-25/bottle except for the splurge wine from Domaine Weinbach. We started the tasting with a very nice horizontal flight of German Rieslings from Joh. Jos. Prum that cost about $40/bottle, but you can certainly find a less expensive trio of wines for the starter portion if you like. more
