Higher oz rating might be better to resist cutting/tearing if say a branch falls on it, or some heavy snowfall.

Cannot necessarily tell which is better or more durable if you only have a denier rating from one and an oz rating from another. The 7.5oz one could be anything from 300 to 1200 denier, while the 600 denier one could be anywhere from 3 to 12 oz. Can you get the missing info from each choice? Also, does one or the other have a specific brand name polyester being used (e.g., SurLast)?

Higher denier (effectively more threads per inch) will be the better choice for durability of the weave vs UV and repeated abrasion, and for ability to repel water. more

In short, if not worried about heavy snow or falling objects, higher denier will be your best bet for quality/longevity. more

You know you need a boat top to provide shade, a cover that spreads from bow to the windshield, or an enclosure that protects the cabin, but perhaps the official name for the canvas escapes you. Review the basic definitions below to find the canvas you need. Then request a quote for that bimini top or cockpit cover or whatever your boat needs.

Made Our Boating Season Very Enjoyable! Our boat was 10 years old when we purchased it and the canvas was stored all rolled up in the boat. When we tried to put the canvas together the force required to zipper the canvas together was making the canvas split on the seams or causing the zippers to tear, so we had to leave parts of the canvas unattached and every time it rained we would get water in the boat. With your zippers in place we could button up all of the canvas and make a very nice weather tight space which made our boating season very enjoyable. Phil R.

Fantastic Results "I wanted to thank you for the fantastic results I have with the EZ-Xtend zipper solution you provided for my Sea Ray. The isinglass had shrunk to the point that installing it was an all-morning job, with some snaps totally unusable due to the material shrinkage. I really was preparing to purchase a complete new canvas set, but hated to spend the money-especially since the canvas is still in excellent shape. The EZ-Xtend zippers have made the canvas/isinglass installation and removal about a 10 minute job! (and looks great too!) Thanks again for the quick solution and the reasonable cost, I really do appreciate it." Steve Donovan - Georgia

If you buy the frame and all online, then you will most likely have bought an inferior gauge of metal compared with what you already had. You will find that it will most likely be cheaper than having a custom bimini recover done on your old frame. This may be tempting, but keep in mind the inferior quality of the frame. If you need a frame, then just look carefully for size and gauge of the metal, fabric, and other comparable components. here

Custom shops will make you a bimini top frame designed for your boat and you won't have to do a thing. A stainless steel frame is a better choice no matter where you buy as long as it is within your budget.

Online boat biminis most often come with plastic fittings. If you search really hard, you may find an upgrade to metal, but I have yet to see it. Plastic is weaker than metal, especially stainless steel. It also degrades in the sun. You can expect them to break and need replacing at some point.

Bimini Straps are also worth mentioning. Retail bimini straps will most likely be polypropylene, and custom shops will use nylon, polyester, or acrylic. These are all better choices than polypropylene, and I have listed them in order of longevity.

Cost is a factor for everything but visibility and lifespan also have a role in this type of marine product. more

This decision though can’t be made on it’s own. You wouldn’t put a turbocharger in Buick would you? The same goes with choosing the right isinglass. As discussed before, these two product has a different lifespan and so do other product that go into the construction of your boat cover. Thread is one of these factors. Standard polyester thread has a 5 year lifespan which is similar to clear vinyl sheets. Gore Tenara thread is more expensive but is guaranteed for life and more suited to be used with Strataglass. Other finishing factors such as using Facing to cover transition area and Xtreme Seal instead of Webbing also go hand in hand in deciding what type of isinglass to choose. It’s essentially standard vs. premium. [links]

Most boaters narrow their decision down to a brand such as Strataglass vs Eisenglass (aka Clear Vinyl Sheets). Clear Vinyl Sheets are by far the most popular and can be found on the majority of boats in any harbor. Strataglass is a big step up in price but you get an excellent product with a much longer life. The list above, in no way exhaustive, may seem daunting. When it comes to making a decision about the type of boat cover or shade structure you need or want, it’s important to consider personal taste, style, and preference. There are a variety of resources to pull information from, including the Industrial Fabrics Association International boat shade top marine fabrics division dedicated to informing consumers. more

It’s helpful to have a basic understanding about the textile the covers are made from. Boat shade tops are made from specialty fabrics that include but are not limited to: more

But why this is important? Well, the type of fabric you use will ultimately dictate the longevity of your boat top cover. You want to find a textile that features, UV Ray, water, mold and mildew resistance. You might also consider finding a boat shade top cover that is lightweight and easy to clean as well as colorfast. Check to see if your cover comes with a warranty. [links]

Without water or UV ray resistance, your boat’s shade top will fade and deteriorate faster. Eventually, you’ll find yourself buying another one, often far earlier than expected. Boat top covers that use material not designed for the rigors of the sea will fray, tear, stretch, fade, and fall apart. Basically, investing in a boat also requires investing in its accessories -- you will save in the long run.
