#1: Mooring covers You cover your pontoon boat with a mooring cover in a few different scenarios including when it’s in the water, being hoisted, or when placed on a trailer. They are larger than a cover you would use when towing and are manufactured to drain off the water with no pooling of rainwater. [links]

Generally speaking, because of the different types of hulls, deck boats are better for slicing through the water, but pontoon boats keep you steady, whether you’re in motion or not. here

Not all pontoon boats have drain plugs. … This design helps to make them air and watertight, meaning unless they get ruptured, they won’t get any water inside of them that would need draining. It also means that should you get a leak, fixing it should be a lot easier.

Reality: To adequately protect your boat, you need to buy the right cover. … If the cover doesn’t fit right, water and debris will get inside your boat and potentially ruin it. Also, be sure to use a cover that’s made of high-quality fabric that is waterproof, UV resistant, and mold and mildew resistant. [links]

What is an automatic bilge pump? Automatic bilge pumps have a built-in float switch. This detects water levels and will turn the automatic bilge pump on when necessary. If you have a boat that’s over 20 ft long that you can sleep in, you have to have an automatic bilge pump. That float switch is an integral piece of boat safety..

The main physical difference between a pontoon and a deck boat is the shape and function of the hull. Deck boats typically have a V-shaped hull, while pontoons lie flat on the water with the deck balanced on two or three hollow aluminum tubes. … It is this stability that makes pontoons such great spaces for entertaining. more

It is surprising how many pontoon boats are on the market that have no bow deck. That is to say that the fencing or superstructure goes right up to the bow so there is no deck upon which to walk to tie-up or to set an anchor. Obviously, this has been done to maximize seating space and keep costs down. That is a trade-off we don’t recommend. Every boat needs a bow deck and a 12” (0.3 m) minimum fore-and-aft measurement for this purpose. more

For those who want to go fast or tow skiers and tubers, we recommend a tri-toon with a 150-hp outboard or larger. Larger tri-toons can easily handle 300-hp engines and some models now handle two large outboards, and we have even tested a 32’ (9.75 m) tri-toon with three large outboard engines. here

Oh yeah, that. In your monthly budget, you should factor in the insurance premium for your boat. Your existing auto policy might cover a grace period that allows you a day or two to switch your policy to the new ride after leaving the dealer. Not so with boats. You should have boat insurance before you leave the dealership. Proof of boating insurance is mandatory in many states, and it might be required by the lender. Some marinas even require proof of a policy for rental slips, and for you tournament anglers out there, many tournaments require coverage. There are two main options for insurance policies—a new policy, independent from any other insurance policy you have, or an umbrella policy, which is bundled with your homeowner’s insurance. There are minimum required coverage areas, including liability to others, medical payments, damages, wreck removal and medical expenses for towed water-skiers. Remember, you want to be sure the cost of your boat is covered, as well as any injuries to you or other boaters and any personal items you have on the boat, e.g., watersports or fishing equipment.
