Without spark plugs, your car won't start. The health of your spark plugs is directly related to the health of your car's engine. It's essential that you keep the spark plugs in good health and replace them as needed so that your car can continue to run at maximum health.

Spark plugs are cheap, you change them in sets as you do with brakes or spark plug wires. You want all of your spark plugs to match and have nearly the same levels of electrical resistance as all of the other plugs. I don't think anyone on this site would only change one spark plug on their own vehicle. Exhale.

Unlike petrol cars, diesels don’t have spark plugs or an ignition system. In diesel engines, pressure is used to raise the temperature until the fuel self-combusts. In cold weather, this can be problematic and so glow plugs are used to warm the air in the cylinders. If you start the car without pre-glowing, it can run badly and be extremely polluting. So if your engine emits an abnormal amount of smoke, better check the glow plugs. Changing glow plugs is a job you can tackle yourself, but be sure you have the right ones for your car and a torque wrench at the ready. Good quality glow plugs will be more reliable, durable and environmentally friendly. [links]

An ignition coil (or spark coil) is an important component in your car: it transfers the power from your battery to the spark plugs – there may be one coil for each spark plug or one coil for two spark plugs. If some of the coils are defective, the engine only works on a few cylinders and loses power. You may see the ‘Service Engine’ light come on and the car might stall or not start at all. You can replace a failing ignition coil fairly easily at home, but remember that you’re dealing with high voltages so must disconnect your battery before you start. more

You’ll find the spark plugs at the head of each cylinder and they deliver the spark that triggers the combustion of the air-fuel mixture. Over time, spark plugs wear out (as the electrodes burn down) and you get misfire, poor acceleration and decrease in fuel economy as well. Good quality spark plugs have a longer life, as the electrodes take longer to burn down and provide a better spark. more

When you turn the key, does your car jump into life? If nothing happens and the radio stays silent, your ignition switch may be faulty. The ignition switch is obviously an important part in your car, as it activates the starter and ignition system, and carries the current to the radio and lighting. You can replace the ignition switch yourself, but it’s not an easy task: you will have to remove the steering wheel and work close to the airbag - which can be dangerous. Don’t hesitate to call a professional mechanic if you’re not feeling confident. more

Spark plugs are somewhat durable components and don’t need to be replaced too often, that said, the general recommendation is about every 30,000 to 90,000 miles. Each vehicle may differ on when they should be replaced. While this can be a fairly simple service and could be considered a do-it-yourself endeavor, take caution as each spark plug location varies by manufacturer. There may be obstructions such as large components or parts that may be difficult to remove without special tools to loosen them. Be sure to consult your owner’s manual or speak with a professional for details on when to replace the spark plugs for your specific vehicle. here

In the past, a vehicle would receive a tune-up that would include replacing spark plugs along with spark plug wires, the distributor, distributor cap, rotor and points, condenser, as well as setting the timing and adjusting the carburetor. These days, with the improved technology in today’s vehicles, the vehicle’s internal computer does most of the work. However, vehicle owners are still required to change spark plugs, sensors, and switches as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. here

Spark plugs, though small, have a mighty task. Like any part of the vehicle that requires maintenance, you’ll want to know ahead of time how often you should change your spark plugs to make sure your engine starts and keeps working properly. Without this important component, your vehicle will fail to start, so making sure they’re functioning correctly and replacing them at the appropriate time is key.
