Two stroke / engine oil does have a shelve life. Most experts state 4 to 5 years in a sealed container (they are dated) and 1 to 2 years max, if it has been opened.

Oil never goes bad. It's a myth. Do research on it. It gets dirty but doesn't go bad, and it could be filtered out. more

Beside above, how long does unused oil last? Unused, unopened and stored in its original container out of extremes of temperature, motor oil will last for an “extended period”. They then go on to suggest that the oil shouldn't be used after a few years; the exact period varying between 2 years (according to Total) up to 5 years (Mobil). more

2 cycle engines are unique from 4 cycle engines in several ways, but the most notable is the absence of an oil sump on the 2 cycle engine. Because there is no oil sump, lubrication is done by mixing 2 cycle oil with the fuel. The 2 cycle oil is burned upon combustion of the air and fuel mixture. Direct Injection engines differ from this model because the fuel is injected into the combustion chamber while the oil is injected into the crankcase. Direct Injection engines have a higher power density than most two cycle engines due to this fact.

Because 2 cycle engines use a mixture of 2 cycle oil and gasoline, their lubrication system is considered a “total-loss” type. Direct Injection engines have higher combustion temperatures, which causes them to require more lubrication than traditional 2 cycle engines that use the oil/gasoline mixture. here

Thanks 12 footer. I had planned to change the impeller before getting out on the water, but hadn't thought about it "taking a set". that makes sense. Should I change it out right now, or will it be ok to just make sure the engine actually runs before worrying about tearing down the lower unit? here

The oil should be fine, provided no condensate got in it. This would be visable,as a streaking. The oil should be an abvious ,consistant color.

You asked if there was anything overlooked, and the one thing that stands-out, is trhe impeller. It may have been brand new when this engine was mothballed, but it has "taken a set", or retained the shape of the pump housing. It qill werk fine for a short time, then, it will fly appart.

It should hold up fine for low-rpm testing purposes. If you have no telltale after one minute at idle, shut-down and go ahead and pull the l/u. (at least you'll know it's running).
They sometimes hang in there for a long time. A cowerker was warned to change the impeller on a motor he bought on an old boat. That boat had not moved for 4 years that I was aware of. He did not head my warning, and got at least 40 hours out of it. He would come into werk and give me the "nanny-nanny-boo-boo" every Monday for quite a while.
Then, one moring, he came in with the long face (LOL). here
