myself i use mercrusier 25w40. it's what mercruiser recommends to use and since i assume the oem knows what's best for their engine. it's what i do. takes the thinking about what should i use out of the equation.

Symptoms are as follows: Boat starts and runs great for 30-45 minutes, then develops a miss. Miss can be made worse by applying any electrical load, for example, trim motor, blower bilge, etc. Engine will eventually stop running and after a cooling off period will restart and run erratically. I took he boat out yesterday, thinking that I had found the likely problem - some corrosion in the canon plug. Same experience - 30-45 minutes of running well, then problems. This time, I touched the coil, and it was clearly too hot. more

1984 Mercruiser 140, Alpha MR drive, serial no. 6853440 - I have been chasing an electrical problem for about a year now and am at my wits end. It is not a fuel problem.

The intrepid Bimmerphiles over at www.e90post.com have uncovered a few drawings from BMW's latest patent request. The drawing shows a new transmission linkage and what looks to be a seven-speed manual transmission. Like the new Porsche 911, the BMW gear shifter has six gears in standard H pattern, with a seventh gear out to the right. more

The 2011 Kia Picanto teased in a sketch ahead of Geneva 2011 Kia are on a bit of a roll at the moment (as are sister company Hyundai) with cars like the new 2011 Kia Optima and the new Kia Sportage taking Kia’s offerings to a much higher level in terms of design and style. And perception of quality. That upwards march looks set to continue with Kia’s version of the Hyundai i10 – the 2011 Kia Picanto – which is due to launch at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011. more

The Maserati Levante – the production version of the Kubang Concept SUV – is based on the new Jeep Grand Cherokee and it was planned to be built in the US alongside the Jeep, but demand for the new Grand Cherokee means Maserati will be building the Levante in Italy instead. Which will probably do its credentials no harm at all. Nor will its engine offerings, which will include the new 3.0 litre twin-turbo V6 from the Ghibli with around 400bhp, the new diesel engine from the Ghibli (and perhaps Fiat’s new V8 diesel when that arrives) and the thumping twin-turbo V8 from the Quattroporte with a round 525bhp.

3. If you have just changed your distributer cap or spark plugs and now your engine backfires, chances are good that you have crossed a couple of plug wires. Check your firing order and make sure the correct wires are going to the correct spark plugs. [links]

If the engine tends to backfire while accelerating you might have a bad carburetor accelerator pump. The engine requires more fuel then normal when it's cold or when you are accelerating. A choke stuck in the open position can contribute to backfiring. more

2. Improper ignition timing can allow the engine to backfire. Conventional (points style) distributers have a mechanical timing advance mechanism that can stick or fail. Even old worn pints can make an engine backfire. Remember. first set the points (dwell) and THEN set the timing. [links]

4. Every once and a while an engine will develope a valve problem. Overheating or over-reving can damage a valve. Is the valves sticks open or gets bent or damaged it will backfire. The best way to determine the condition of the engines valves is to perform a Leakdown Test.

An engine can backfire for a few reasons.
