You could put a sticker on the fuel flap/cap to remind you what fuel to put in. Not to the extent of the VW ad though. Just a thought. [links]

At home fit longer suction and delivery hoses plus a lead with croc clips for power from the car battery.

My fuel pump is easily obtained and really handy. It is the electric fuel pump from a Citroen BX GTi. These cars are everywhere in the scrapyards and the pump shouldn't cost any more that a fiver. It is on the rear axle in a rubber mounting block with the filter canister piggy backed onto it.

Think I'll get a spare Citroen pump and keep it in the garage - thanks again, but just for the record, can Ian confirm the sort of hose he uses and does the position on the side of the tank stop the tube from dropping down well below fuel level in the tank and what about the device referrd to by Dorian preventing syphoning? here

(a) Keep all parts of the fuel line from the fuel tank to the fuel line connection at the carburetor above the level of the top of the fuel tank. The tank top level is determined with the boat in its "static floating position." Practically, the fuel pump and fuel filter(s) must also be above the tank top.

(1) Directly at the fuel tank connection arranged to be readily accessible for operation from outside the compartment, and
(2) If the length of fuel line from the tank outlet to the engine inlet is greater than 12 feet, a manual shutoff valve shall be installed at the fuel inlet connection to the engine. [links]

In case of an EMP blast, there will be thousands of cars abandoned on the road, as the electrical devices and sensors will be destroyed the vehicle will be no longer operational. The bright side is that all these cars contain more or less fuel, all you have to do is to siphon it out. You probably will not be the only one to think of siphoning gas out from the abandoned cars, but most people will try to siphon it out the old way, which no longer works with modern cars.
If you have read my article Does an EMP affect batteries? ( Can they survive? ), then you probably already know that some car batteries will also survive, most likely in older model cars.

Some gas tanks use the butterfly valve, this is like a small door that lets the gas go in but it doesn’t let it out. However, you can brute force your way through this with a non-conductive material. Use a plastic or wooden tool to prie open the valve, make sure that the tool is wider than the hose with which you will siphon out the gas. If you are wondering which vehicles are the best for a bug out situation then check out my recent article Best bug out vehicle for EMP ( Top 26 ). more

My recommendation is to always have a gas siphon kit in your car and in your bug out bag as well, my personal recommendation is to get a multi-use siphon pump which comes with everything you need to siphon gas out from any car Click here to check it out on Amazon.com

The ability to get fuel after a major SHTF event is extremely important, in larger scale SHTF events you will not have the ability to buy fuel from anywhere. You might think that you could barter for additional fuel, but odds are there will be no rule of law, and people once they realize this will think that it is a “free for all”, and they are not wrong. You could also store a lot of fuel in some well-ventilated part of your home, however sooner or later you will have to find additional fuel.
