So whilst motor oil manufacturers say we should responsibly dispose of oil after a few years they all stop short of saying that the oil does actually expire. Clearly, there is a vested interest in their future sales here so to get to the truth about oil we need to drill down deeper.

You should not dispose of waste oil from a business at the same place you would your household oil waste – Google how this differs for your area as the law changes. [links]

Upon transporting oil from your household to a disposal site this location will then be legally responsible for disposing of it and your work is done! [links]

Separation of the additives from the oil is one sign the oil may not work well. If you notice clumps, gel lumps, or the oil is thick and sticky, then it probably isn’t safe to use in your car. You should also check the colour for haziness or a milky look, which could signify overexposure to moisture. If you don’t notice colour changes or consistency changes, then consider your oil safe to use.

The answers to these questions vary based on the type of oil you buy and where you store it.

The best way to tell if the stored oil is still good for your engine is to check the condition of the oil before you put it in your car. If you stored it in a cool dark place, where it wasn’t at risk for oxidizing, then it’s probably safe to use it. However, if the area you stored the oil had frequent temperature changes or exposure to excess moisture, it could affect the condition and efficacy of your oil.

If you buy a big box of engine oil and store it for a few years, it’s probably good to use. However, if you buy the oil and then purchase a new car, you need to check if the formula you purchased meets the current standards. Car manufacturers consistently update the way they manufacture engines and the science behind the way vehicles operate. here

On average, an oil manufacturer will give the oil it sells a shelf life of two to five years. This means you can buy your favourite oil in bulk and feel confident that it will work well a couple of years after purchase. more

Two stroke / engine oil does have a shelve life. Most experts state 4 to 5 years in a sealed container (they are dated) and 1 to 2 years max, if it has been opened.

Furthermore, does 2 stroke gas go bad? If there is no stabilizer, gas can become stale within 30 days, although the engine may still run you may notice problems like it being hard to start or sluggish. If it has stabilizer, it can go for 6 mos. to a year.

The basic oil is good. The oil in a 2 cycle is blended with gas to help lubricate during spark plug firing. It does not sit around a bearing for years. This might not change much in 1 or 2 years, but if the oil is 5 years old - you can garantee it's not the 'optimal' formula for current blends. more
