After reading the details in the adults only section I am leaning towards having a Volvo mechanic winterize the engine. [links]
But I would actually trust Don over the manual. here
My owner manual for our Volvo 5.7Gi-C says 'do not use fogging oil'. here
The procedure is about identical to Mercruisers as far as the fogging mixture you run. Here is a post that has the Merc service bulletin that explains the process.

If you struggle with it, feel free to send it, the rebuild parts and, a return shipping slip to me, I can rebuild it in under an hour and get it back to you as quickly as you are will to pay for, shipping-wise. [links]
If you want to fight corrosion, fill the engine & risers with vegetable oil.

Pulling the hoses from the t-stat outlet to the exhaust manifolds SHOULD drain the manifolds/risers.
If you pull a t-stat housing hose below the t-stat, do not expect the closed t-stat to allow the exhaust risers to drain through it.
Also, from the manifold inlets to the t-stat housing is uphill.
I got the starboard riser plug out but I'll need to replace it as it took some vice grips. I would like to put in a valve, but I don't think there is room. more
The Volvo Penta Easy Drain system is designed with an anti-siphon vent that allows the engine to drain while in the water. The anti-siphon vent is actuated automatically with the push of a single knob, without disconnecting any water hoses. Previously, it was necessary to disconnect three different hoses. A locking pin ensures no accidental opening of the system. Because all new-generation Volvo Penta gasoline engines are designed with a closed-loop fresh-water cooling system, the engine block is constantly protected by anti-freeze, making it easier to drain the raw water from the system.
“With the Volvo Penta Easy Drain we are introducing technology never before offered in the boating industry – a solution that allows boaters to drain raw water from their vessels in mere minutes without having to remove the boat from the water,” said Ron Huibers, president of Volvo Penta of the Americas. “Our engineers designed the solution from the ground up, with the specific needs of boaters in mind.” [links]
Volvo Penta has announced the launch of the patent-pending Volvo Penta Easy Drain, the first gasoline sterndrive raw water engine-draining system that can be activated with a single knob, whether the boat is in or out of the water. This innovative product makes its debut at the International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition & Conference (IBEX), taking place October 4-7 in Tampa, Florida.
“The Volvo Penta Easy Drain is part of our ongoing Easy Boating initiative, which aims to make it easier for boat owners to enjoy the boating lifestyle by removing barriers and simplifying operation and maintenance of the boat,” said Huibers. “Furthermore, the new solution allows boaters in cold-weather climates to extend the boating season by making it easy to drain the engine when there is a risk of freezing, as well as for long-term storage.”

this is only our 3rd week with the boat so I am still learning her ways. here
While on the lake yesterday, the boat did not want to start. to get it started, had to crank and crank then feed it fuel at the right moment. once started she was fine including idle. more
