Sometimes, people will plumb them inline with a mechanical pump to add more volume and pressure. This is more for a full on drag car though.

The switch will also let the pump run when you hit the starter because the engine doesn't have oil pressure yet.

Yep, without some way to automatically shut them off, they can be VERY dangerous. [links]

If you look at an older car with a carbureted engine, you’d most likely find a mechanical fuel pump. Controlled and operated by manual means, mechanical fuel pumps were phased out in favor of electric fuel pumps. This is because electric fuel pumps do a better job delivering precise, high-pressure flow rates that offer max horsepower to the engine and meet the stricter emission requirements.

The first step is deciding what you want to do with the mechanical pump. You have two options:

If the mechanical fuel pump in your classic Chevy is either about to give out or not giving enough power to the engine, upgrading to an electric fuel pump is the way to go.

The fuel pump only has to keep the carb fuel bowls full (I'm pretty sure that's a carbed engine). It has nothing to do with the engine running lean/rich. The fuel bowls have a float connected to a needle which jams into a seat when the fuel is at a certain level. It is a self regulating system. more

The mechanical fuel pump runs off pressure waves in the crank case. It is probably bolted to the block and has a non-fuel hose running to it. Make sure the hose is plugged, as well as the hole behind the fuel pump that you can't see. Don't let those holes vent to the air or your engine won't run right. The easiest thing to do is just leave the mechanical fuel pump in place and disconnect only the fuel hoses but it's cleaner to remove it over time.

The best thing about an electric fuel pump is you can throw away the squeeze bulb and never prime your engine again. more

Electric pump is fine. Run it off keyed power.

Open the new clamps and insert the fuel lines in them. Check the orientation of the bulb: An arrow is clearly visible on the squeeze bulb to indicate the direction of fuel flow. It should be pointed toward the engine. [links]

The primer bulb creates the initial flow of fuel between the inboard, built-in fuel tank and the carburetor, in low-pressure, carbureted outboard motors, or between the fuel tank and the vapor separation tank -- and the electric fuel pump -- on electronically fuel-injected motors. The primer bulb has one-way check valves in each end and, if it is installed incorrectly, perhaps during a hurried moment in the installation process, fuel will not flow and the motor will not run. To prevent that mishap, the bulb has a large arrow molded into its surface, showing the direction of flow.

Insert both of the fuel lines into the bulb so that the fuel line going to the fuel distribution appliance is inserted in the end of the bulb to which the arrow on the bulb points. The line from the tank should be on the end of the bulb where the base of the arrow is located. here
