if by shifter shaft you mean the side handle then you may have a leak in the PH base gasket … very easy to replace
or inspect but has indicated you need to pull the head ..

just make 100% you get an identical gasket because patterns differ [links]
in any event just pull the head and inspect everything just 7 bolts and a few parts/hose to disconnect see video here
I can't help you with the prop exchange but just in case you do not have the original propeller part number, it is 277650 and appears to be still available.

Re: 1953 Model 7512 Fleetwin 7.5 HP Evinrude
Well, Got the parts on thursday. The lower unit seal kit the I ordered for a 55'-58' weren't compatible with the 53' I was able to find o-rings from the auto parts store that worked for the lower clutch rod seal but i haven't found a suitable replacement for the lower drive shaft seal yet. I replaced both coils and sanded and gapped the points, since iboats didn't have them is stock. I wasn't able to get the carburator rebuilt before the canoe trip Saturday because the pull rope broke and when I put on a replacement i didn't tighten the mounting screw down enough so the whole retraction mechanism puked all over the inside of the engine. Lucky me, that was the only page I didn't copy out of the manual from the library. So by the time i figured out how to rebuild that nightmare it was 2 am and we were leaving that morning for the trip. So <br />I got it to start tuned the carb as best as i could and off we went. The only problem was getting it to idle at very low speeds. Girlfriend still caught a nice size white bass and a small largemouth trolling pretty fast though. Had a wonderful trip and just want to say this website is great and thanks to all that answered my questions and answering everyone elses questions about the 7512 7.5 evinrude motor. Going again after it cools down THANKS.
