Use caution not to get your hand or other materials caught in the chuck. As soon as the field is excited, the portable generators will produce power and the drill will turn on. here

The voltage going through the power winding creates a magnetic field, which is intensified due to the iron core of the stator laminations. The rotor intersects this magnetic field as it is spun past the power winding, thus inducing a voltage in the rotor winding. Once current flow is present in the rotor winding the rotor has been flashed. [links]

The reason this works is because the electric motor in the drill will act as a small generator when spun backwards. The magnets in the drill’s motor induce a voltage into the motor windings, which is fed back through the trigger, cord and into the generators receptacle. From there it goes into the power winding of the stator. [links]

Connect the neutral wire to the negative battery terminal. Pull the starter cord several times, then remove the extension cord and battery. Connect the spark plug wire and start the engine. If the residual magnetism in the alternator had weakened, this should be enough to get it started again. here

If flashing the field does not make the portable generators work, you may have additional problems, besides a lack of magnetism in the rotor. Further testing will be needed. Hopefully, this will give a simple way to field flash your portable generators if needed – Bruce Perrault [links]

Residual magnetism in the generator exciter field allows the generator to build up voltage during start-up. This magnetism is sometimes lost due to shelf time or improper operation, among other reasons. Restoring this residual magnetism is possible and is sometimes referred to as "flashing the exciter field".

In this regard, why would a generator run but not produce electricity? here

Subsequently, question is, what is field flashing in synchronous generator? Field flashing is used on self-excited generators, where the residual magnetism is not high enough to build up the terminal voltage when starting. What is done is to connect an external DC source to the field winding to start the voltage build up; the flashing source is removed for normal operation. here

Solid-state or semiconductor components may be included in the voltage regulator. Perform field flashing according to the manufacturer's instructions to avoid equipment damage. here

If the machine does not have enough residual magnetism to build up to full voltage, usually provision is made to inject current into the rotor from another source. This may be a battery , a house unit providing direct current , or rectified current from a source of alternating current power. Since this initial current is required for a very short time, it is called "field flashing". Even small portable generator sets may occasionally need field flashing to restart. here

NOTE: THE POLARITY IN THE ILLUSTRATION ABOVE IS REVERSED. The black wire should go into the RIGHT SIDE plug on each end, not the left side as shown. The white wire goes uninterrupted from the LEFT plug blade to the other end on the LEFT side. more

For 220 volt AC wiring, Black and Red should ALWAYS be used as hot wires. White — ALWAYS used as neutral wire. Green (or bare) — ALWAYS the ground wire.

Home generators in storage can “go flat” or lose their magnetism. Then they will not produce electricity, even though the small gasoline engine turning them is running just fine. There is a simple way to fix that, however. Large generators (like hydro power units) lose their magnetism very quickly: that is the reason Gary North says that if the grid goes down completely for 2 weeks it may well stay down: the power needed to re-energize the generators might not be available. It takes electricity of the correct voltage and frequency to reestablish the magnetism in the generator to produce electricity.

Electric Drill Method If the drill is reversible, move the direction switch to the forward position. Start the generator. While depressing the trigger on the drill, spin the drill chuck in reverse direction. This will excite the field and the generator will now produce electricity.

Likewise, how do you flash a generator with a battery? Connect F+ to the positive pole of the battery. Hold the F- lead by the insulated portion of the lead wire, touch F- to the negative pole of the battery for about 5 to 10 seconds, then remove. Reconnect F+ and F- to the regulator. Repeat the procedure if the generator fails to build voltage.
