I've only winterized once, but everything was fine in the spring using just the blowout method. I didn't follow a specific procedure, but I ran the air for quite a while and was thorough about individually opening and closing the various valves and faucets--as well as running the pump--to ensure that the pressurized air got everywhere. I think I also raised and lowered the tongue a few times for good measure, and left all the drains open when I was done.

Personally, I have no desire to futz with pumping and flushing antifreeze, so I just blow out the lines really well and call it good. YMMV.

If that's the case here, you could try priming first with a full tank of water. You could then drain the remaining water in the tank, replace it with your three gallon of antifreeze, and run that up into the system until it forces the remaining water out. here

Several people have noted that the pump has a hard time priming when the level in the tank is low. I've found this to be particularly true if the system has been completely drained.

Don't forget that even with the blowout method, you should still pour some antifreeze into the traps, as well as letting a little run into the valve slides in the gray and black water drains. Good luck!

One of the best—and cheapest—ways to limit the risk of freezing is to insulate the tank. This involves wrapping the top and sides with blankets made from fiberglass, mineral wool, ceramic fiber, or some other cushioning material. These wraps are also layered with sheets of aluminum to further reflect heat as it escapes the tank. Not all insulation wraps are alike, however, as some are pricier and have higher temperature thresholds. How much and what type of insulation you should use depends on the climate of the storage tank: The lower the average temperatures in winter the more robust and protective the insulation system needs to be.

6.) Keep water moving – Moving water is more energetic and, thus, requires colder temperatures to freeze. Preventing frost can be a simple matter of jostling the tank from side to side on particularly cold days, installing some sort of flow system to keep water agitated and moving, or periodically flushing or plumbing system. if the tank is hooked up to a pressurized water line you can run the taps to keep water moving through the pipes.

What’s really nice about insulation is that it’s efficient and doesn’t require any energy input or maintenance beyond the installation process. Of course, you’ll want to keep an eye out for tears or loosened fabric, but for the most part insulation is a “set it and forget it” solution.

For the back hole, the pipe that runs to the skimmer, blow out the line with a wet/dry vac, Cyclone blower or air compressor. Alternatively, you can use pool antifreeze in the pipe, adding one gallon for every 10 feet of pipe. here

Using this plug is also specialized. The way we would do it is to push it into the skimmer hole, about 3/4 of the way down, and then blow air from the pump towards the skimmer. Be careful to hold the plug while blowing air, it could blow straight up and injure someone. While blowing, air (and water spray) will be blowing up out of the skimmer, and eventually air will bubble out of the drain. After bubbling air out of the drain for about 30 seconds, quickly slam the plug down to its full depth and tighten up the wingnut, while the blower is still blowing. here

Water inside the skimmer well that freezes puts extreme outward pressure on the skimmer walls as it expands. To break up the ice sheet and protect the skimmer, use one of these three methods. more

Don’t pour pool antifreeze into your pool equipment – pump, filter, heater. It can damage sensitive pool parts. And never add antifreeze to a chlorinator, a reaction could occur.

Pool antifreeze is also used for winterizing a pool skimmer, as mentioned above, to keep water from freezing inside of the skimmer well, and cracking the skimmer.
