Set the gas can on the ground at the fuel dock and fill it with the proper grade of gasoline, 87 octane. Evinrude asserts that no benefit is gained from using a fuel with a higher octane rating. [links]

Divide the number of gallons by the mix ratio for the motor use. While a 5-horsepower motor is unlikely to be subjected to racing conditions, the racing mix is 25 parts gasoline to 1 part oil--a full 5-gallon container, 640 ounces, is properly mixed when you add 26 ounces of oil: 640/25=25.6, or 26 ounces. A similar mixture, 24 parts gasoline to 1 part oil, is required for two-stroke Evinrudes built between 1959 and 1963, a 20-to-1 mix is needed for older motors and a 50-to-1 mix for newer two-stroke motors, except those being broken in, which use a 25-to-1 mix, like a racing motor. more

Mixing the fuel and oil for a 5-horsepower Evinrude outboard motor isn't an onerous task. A two-stroke 5-horsepower Evinrude motor, like all two-stroke motors, needs a mix of gas and oil in its gas tank, since it doesn't have a separate lubrication system. You know the capacity of the gas can you'll use to fuel the motor's gas tank and, with a little bit of arithmetic, you can figure out how much oil to add to the fuel. [links]

1964: Oil made specifically for outboard engines became available. OMC published in its 1964 edition of the Johnson Service Manual that all engines made by OMC before 1964 should use a quart of outboard oil per 6 gallons of regular gas. That is a 24:1 mix. here

That rule: 24:1 using outboard oil that is now certified to meet TC-W3 standards and 87 octane regular unleaded, held up until recently when papers got published calling for the little guys to go back to 16:1 or to 20:1.

That is what many guys will tell you. Use 16:1.

Originally the instructions on the tank said to mix one half pint of 30W non-detergent motor oil per gallon. That was a 16:1 mix. Lot of smoke and bad (a matter of taste) smell, but she ran fine.

What’s the Year of Manufacture? here

If you check all the available Evinrude outboard motors noticing how particular they normally are in terms of the year of manufacture won’t be difficult. All specific makes or models specify the year the model was manufactured and having this information will come in handy when trying to look for details on Evinrude outboard motor gas and oil ratios over the internet. There are often two techniques you can use in determining the year a motor was manufactured.

First of all and basically the easiest method is checking the name plate of the motor. Nonetheless if you have accurate information on Horsepower ratings you can also be provided with the right gas to oil ratio online.

At 16:1 do you have any plug fouling? I am not worried about the cost for just a bit more oil but would like to avoid changing plugs out in the middle of the lake. If all is ok I wouldn’t mind using the factory recommended amount. I also use premium gas as thats all I can get without ethinal in it. more

I have a 1955 5.5 that i brought back to life with new points, condenser, coils, waterpump, carb kit ect. My question is what mix to use. I think its supposed to be 16:1 and was told I could run at 24:1 with newer oils like the Johnson tcw lll. Now I would like to keep it running for many more years so opinions are welcome from the pros here. I ran it today with a mix of 20:1 and it runs great on my little 12 ft boat but not sure whats best. Thanks for any advice! Jim

I run 16-1 in my ’54 5.5 per the original factory recommendation. Modern TCW oils burn a lot cleaner and probably do offer a higher degree of protection but I figure oil is cheap in the overall scheme of this hobby.
