I got the 3/16" Harbor Freight pop riveter. I installed the 1/8" nosepiece and test pulled a couple of 1/8" rivets (just in the gun, not installed in a hole). It took two pulls to cut the stem off the rivet both times, so I think it needs oil per the directions.

How much hydraulic oil do I add? Fill up just the the tube in the center? (red arrow) Go a little more and cover the black ring? (blue arrow) Fill the whole base up? (would be more than 1 cup of oil so I highly doubt it)

If you spend your spare time performing home maintenance or redecoration, eventually you’ll come across a problem only a rivet can solve. Your project may involve attaching metal sheets, or perhaps you want to frame that new family portrait in the living room. No matter your reasons, rivets are a great way to connect joints as they’re far stronger and more permanent than screws or nails.

You may want to consider how big of a rivet gun you want, especially if you need it to fit into narrow or awkward spaces. Keep in mind that any size mentioned in a rivet gun’s product name refers to the handle length. The size we’ll list for each gun is its full length.

Like battery-powered rivet guns, this type works faster and is more powerful than hand or lever rivet guns. It uses compressed air to install the rivet and puts little strain on your hand. If you have lots of riveting to do, this is a great choice. You just need to ensure it always has a hosed connection to a supply of compressed air, which means it’s not as portable as the other types. [links]
