My sailing has mostly been on the sort of yachts that were built in the late 70s and early 80s when GRP lay-up was on the heavy side compared to today’s standards.
Do a stem to stern inspection and be honest with yourself, make notes and if you doubt something, have it double-checked.
So why go there in the first place when there are so many wonderful sailing areas closer to home?
Machinery is kept simple for ease of maintenance in remote areas. The engine is a bullet proof naturally aspirated six-cylinder Cummins. Warmth is provided by a reliable Refleks heater. With an endless supply of glacial fresh water in the cruising area, there is no need for a watermaker. here
A rugged aluminum sailing yacht for high latitude expeditions. Featuring a lifting keel and rudder.
Hamish and Kate came to the office with a long list of requirements that long experience had shown them would be necessary for a successful expedition charter yacht. Chief among these were a fully retractable keel and rudder for exploring often uncharted areas. The aluminum construction is necessarily robust and much of the ballast is internal. Since stability is provided by mass instead of draft, Seal has a comfortable motion that is appreciated in the frequent rough conditions in which she sails. here
Hamish Laird and his wife Kate had been running sailing expeditions to Antarctica aboard Skip Novak's Pelagic for several years when they decided to have a boat of their own purpose-built for sailing the rough waters and exploring the harsh but beautiful landscapes at the bottom of the world. more
Common living areas are located in the spacious pilothouse. Since the cold polar air makes dining in the cockpit uncomfortable, and having the saloon below denies charter guests the spectacular views that are the very reason they took their trip; the main saloon and dining area are located up in the pilothouse where the scenery as well as the food can be enjoyed in warmth. Also sharing the space is the galley, so the cook and crew can enjoy each other's company. Belowdecks is reserved for sleeping cabins. It is an excellent arrangement that allows crew and guests to spend every waking hour drinking in the beauty of the pristine and unique parts of the world where they travel.

He has done so in conjunction with naval architect Merfyn Owen of Owen Clarke Design, best known for its high performance IMOCA 60 and Class 40 designs.
The question of whether the T-shaped bulb might be liable to snagging detritus and, in particular, kelp, which is common in high latitudes, is also open to debate. Owen said: “Kelp entanglement can be mitigated by always approaching anchorages with a watchkeeper at the bow in daylight, with the keel raised to its maximum extent and at reduced speed.
She’ll undertake this programme with up to eight paying guests and four crew including ice pilots and other specialist guides when required. For any yacht it’s quite an ask.
The opening extends right to the waterline and care will be needed when using this in anything other than flat water.
First impressions suggested an easy to sail, fast and manoeuvrable yacht. She feels lively and rewarding to sail and it will be interesting to see how she behaves in big waves. I expect Qilak has every chance of meeting the passage making targets her owner has set for her and provide a comfortable, safe platform for high latitudes adventure.
