But here’s the thing about Monaco. The traffic—mostly made up of Bentley Mulsannes, Rolls-Royce Phantoms, all sorts of Ferrari’s, and more than an occasional Bugatti—is usually pretty congested. And it only gets worse when marque events like the Monaco Grand Prix or the Monaco Yacht Show are on.

The view from a Monacair helicopter headed to Nice is spectacular and there's plenty of legroom too. . [+] Credit Bill Springer

In fact, since I recently caught a Monacair flight out of Monaco bound for Nice airport a short distance down the coast. And I’m most definitely NOT a VIP. But since I’d just completed a 1,000-mile London to Monaco ride to raise money for the Blue Marine Federation, and I was travelling with my bicycle, the ease of being whisked from my hotel with all my bulky luggage (the short car ride to the helipad is part of the experience) to the airport made me feel like one. “Before the time of GPS and other satellite navigation systems, captains from the Royal Palm Yacht Club and Boca Raton Hotel and Club would come into the store and ask for Bill’s advice on how to cross the Gulf Stream,” Zuccarini said. “Remember, it was in the 70s. He would pull a paper chart out in the store and help them plot the course, figuring the differential between the Gulf Stream speed and the speed of their boat. [links]

Many people benefitted from Capt. Astras’ knowledge, nautical and otherwise, said his son. Barry Zuccarini is someone who worked with him at Boca Marine in the 1970s, and occasionally was hired on as mate on Norwegian Queen. [links]

Friends said they were surprised to hear that Capt. Astras had died. Capt. Dobson said his friend had been retired but had been an observer for international game fishing tournaments. The two got in touch every week to talk about boats and kids. Bosun Botvina said she will miss Capt. Astras.

Shannon Wiley met Capt. Astras through his sons, David and Randy, when they all attended the Boy Scouts of America Sea Scouts program. Wiley said he worked summers on the yacht doing odd jobs and helping on fishing trips.

Super-yacht broker Jamie Edmiston traces “yacht spotting” back to the public’s interest in Aristotle Onassis and Jacqueline Kennedy, who traveled the world on the Greek billionaire’s 325-foot Christina O in the late 1960s and 70s. For those interested in the wealthy couple, paparazzi photos of the former First Lady sunning herself on deck represented the most unattainable of luxury lifestyles—one with a hydraulic swimming pool that could be converted to a dance floor, a Renoir painting at sea, and seats covered in the foreskins of whales’ penises. But for boat aficionados, the Christina O and other impressive yachts since represent much more.

Tanya Blaylock, Quintessentially People’s yacht-crew placement director, explains that you might see yacht “fans or spotters on the docks, especially if a high-profile yacht is coming into port.” Once the smaller yachts have been docked, and the larger yachts are moored, there is not much movement during the festival. “Guests do not get taken to sea during the festival,” Blaylock says. “This is called a ‘static charter,’ meaning the vessel does not move; the yacht is used as a floating hotel and event venue.” more

“All yacht owners and guests love boats in general, so they like to see if they can recognize shipyards,” Roffignac says of her clients, especially during yacht season, which runs through the Monaco Yacht Show, in September. “Sometimes there is an interesting design or there is something fun happening and they want to know the boat next door.”
