Yacht charter companies have very restrictive cancellation policies because it is hard to fill a cancelled booking on short notice. Read the cancellation policy carefully and make sure you understand it before you commit to it. If you cancel less than 60 days prior to the start of your charter, you are typically liable for the charter fee of the dates they are unable to rebook (which might be the full charter!), so plan your dates carefully. Trip insurance (which most charter companies offer for an extra fee) will cover the cost of the charter if you are forced to cancel due to illness, injury, a death in the family, or other emergency, but only for specific reasons – read the trip insurance policy carefully to understand what is and isn’t covered. Thanks, Larry! I’ve corrected the name and the link. As you probably know, there was a redirect from the ABC URL to your new site, but it does make sense to have the right name and link.
The primary motivation for owners to put their boats in to charter is financial. Owners commonly recover 60%-80% of the annual cost of owning their boat through charter income. Plus, owners can get tax advantages by setting up their chartered yacht as a business. In this way, a boat owner can own a larger boat than they might otherwise afford, and it makes owning a boat they only use a few weeks a year much more palatable. The downside is that other people are using their boat (a truly abhorrent concept for some boat owners), and they need to schedule in advance the times they want to use their own boat, particularly during the peak summer season (mid-June through early September).
Most yachts in a charter fleet are privately owned, much like a vacation home or condo rental. The charter company represents the owners by listing, advertising, booking and managing all interactions with the charterers. They also provide cleaning and maintenance crews to make sure that the yacht’s systems are functioning and that the boat is clean and ready for each charter. The charter company takes a percentage of the charter fee for these services, and charges the owner for any maintenance or needed repairs. Damage caused by the charterer (other than normal wear and tear) is the responsibility of the charterer, but is often covered by the daily insurance required as part of the charter agreement.
On the other hand, I’ve heard people say that boats in charter are “always breaking down” and in need of constant repairs. But honestly I’ve never heard that from somebody who owns or has owned a boat that is in charter, always from somebody “who knows somebody” that owns or services charter yachts, and usually in a tone of voice that implies no rational human being would consider putting their boat in charter.
The majority of people don’t see the difference between a job and a career, in our generation it is often associated with a negative connotation. But what really is the difference between a job and a career for yacht crew?

Forgot to take pics of the finished dinner, but here’s the next night with white chili (using those white beans) and “recipe-ready” red beans for the next day’s Red Beans & Rice: here
You may have seen pieces that I’ve written before about “Thermos Cooking” for rice and dried beans; this takes it to a whole new level of cooking a whole meal.
In addition to letting me start dinner whenever I feel like it (more on this below), the thermal cooker has other benefits:
Wow. I love my thermal cooker. It has made getting dinner SO much less hectic. Why didn’t I get one years ago?
Put the stainless lid over both (keep the big burner on until this step is done): here
