Everyone comes in search of the quintessential Santorini experience: to explore the narrow winding streets and whitewashed houses of the twin cliff-top towns of Thira and Oia, overlooking the deep blue waters of the caldera.

The island's official name is Thira and its main town, Fira, is also the capital of the Cyclades islands. It is a cosmopolitan island and is therefore quite expensive. The locals live mainly off agriculture and tourism. The islands largest export product is soil; 2.000.000 tons a year are used all over the world, mainly to make concrete. The Suez channel was built with this concrete for example. more

Traditional dishes such as tomato balls, the Santorini salads, split peas in all their variations, white aubergine, stuffed round courgette's, omelets, cooked capers, fresh cheese, and local specialties including apoxti (a type of cured ham), sausages, wild rabbit with a cheese and egg sauce, brantada, sweet melitinia, and saffron bread rusks, all express the rich and varied cuisine of the island's culture. For approx. € 25 per person you can take a fast boat from Fira to Oia and back. You don't need to go up, but you remain down in the old port. It's well indicated. From there it's 20 minutes to Ammoudi Port in Oia. The bus from the port to the center of Oia is included and you have 1.5 hours to spend before turning back by bus to Fira. here

We arrived at the cruise port of Fira on Oct. 11. After the passengers on cruise ship excursions debarked at the "excursion" port, the ship eased over to Fira/port. Independants going ashore were faced with long lines at the cable car (6 cars in tandem, 6 people to a car, approximately 3.5 minute turn times. The walk up the steps takes apporximately 45 minutes of serious effort.

An excellent solution, offered by a traveller on Cruise-Critic did the trick. Right at the port, beside the line to the cable car, are two store fronts advertizing boat transfers to Oia. One is a high-speed boat. No reservations required, walk up and buy a 20 euro ticket and get on the fast ferry. A 12 minute run takes you to the port at Oia. Included is a ticket for the bus up the crater to the Oia city center, along with a second ticket for the bus transfer to Fira (which runs more or less hourly). We started about 9:30A, spent time walking around the cliff edge and shops, had a drink break at a beautiful restaurant with a great view, caught the noon bus to Fira (approx. 25 minutes) and were having lujnch at the Pelican restaurant (beside the Cathedral) overlooking the ships and harbor before 1:00P. here

Always visit the tourist information on the dock before you head off. You always need to check on the latest information and status of the trail. This is also where you can pick up the hiking map of all the trails mentioned above. [links]

It's about 4 miles from the cruise ships to the Cocoa Beach pier, 5-10 minutes by car, taxi or uber. If you have the time it's a great place to hang out, swim, walk on the beach and good restaurants nearby. here
