It depends on how they were cleaned and frozen. If packed in water, or glazed, they should be fine. If wrapped in freezer paper, they are probably freezer burned, and will be dry and rubbery. If exposed to air, even inside a sealed bag, all the moisture will be drawn out, forming frost/ice in the bag. The best long term freezing option for fish is to glaze in ice, or to freeze in a container with enough water to cover the fish. Vacume packing is probably second best.

If they are not filleted or steaked yet, they might be ok. Also, more oily species will last a bit longer.

Seibel
Don't do much trout anymore, mostly ocean fish and Salmon. We keep our up to one year and never had a problem. We clean an remove skin also any dark meat right under skin. Wrap in seran wrap and then frezzer paper. Before we go to ocean next year eat fish every day until gone so wh can start over.

Best way to freeze fish is in a watertight freezer bag filled with water. The fish will be like fresh when thawed. Remember that 500 year old guy they found frozen in a block of ice on the glacier in Switzerland? His flesh was like he just died.

Jerry

At zero degrees and properly wrapped, quality is best for 2–3 months (fatty) and 6 months (lean).

My neighbor brought back some trout from a fishing trip and gave me a few. They’re already cleaned, etc. and I threw them in the freezer. How long before I need to cook them up?

Properly stored, frozen trout will maintain best quality for about 9 months in the freezer, although it will usually remain safe to eat after that.

It won’t come as a surprise that smoked salmon spoils. And telling if it’s still okay to eat is usually pretty straightforward. First of all, look for any visual cues that the fish is done for. It technically can go moldy, but that’s likely to happen only after you’ve opened the package and stored it for like 10 days. here

In frozen fish, look for: Whitish or grayish-brown dry, flakes or patches, called freezer burn, at the edges of the fish or over the surface, indications that they fish has dried out. here

To have perfectly fresh trout for a longer period of time, it should be stored in as less temperature as possible. There is no restriction in storing the trout by either making fillets or freezing it completely, but it has been seen that a trout stored with its head on, stay fresh for a longer period of time. here

Any food item, if stored correctly can be stored for a longer period of time before getting stale. In case of trout, storing it after gutting can help increasing shelf life. A non-gutted trout becomes stiff and gets harder to clean once frozen. Moreover, it also gets stale easily. here
