See full version: How often should the impeller be replaced

I have been boating for 50 years and never changed an impeller annually and never removed one that had any damage to it other than having a "set" in the blades from sitting in the cramped part of the rotation cycle for too long. I never had an engine overheat due to an impeller. I never was stranded due to an impeller. Never had a blade or parts break off. more

If you have your pee tube hooked up properly, it will tell you if the impeller is providing the necessary water to the engine. Nowadays engines have overtemp alarms that warn you of problems. [links]

If your water pump fails, you can limp back to the dock if you have to. Just takes a little while. It's not a life and death thing.

I don't change them unless I know I did something, obtained a used engine of unknown origin, or just had nothing else to do. I usually spin my engine for a few seconds if I don't run it for more than a week just to keep the rings and bearings free and to reposition the impeller. here

It has just 1 wire, which wraps around the spark plug wire, and using induction, counts spark plug firing pulses. here

it will still pee, but the temps are up.

One thing I remember a mechanic saying - OEM costs a little more but lasts longer, especially from cracking. I always buy OEM. here

I have heard of some people saying 1 time a year and others saying 1 time every 3 years. I really didn't run my outboard for that many hours last year and the P/O said that it has recently been done. Debating on changing mine this spring.

It depends on what goes through it. I change mine at three years but check if annually (only takes 10 min). I have never seen any wear or cracks when I flex the blades. here

A ruined impeller can also be caused by running aground, says David Greenwood, product planning manager at Suzuki Marine. here

“I think the most-common cause of impeller failure I see is simply old age,” says Dan Jansen, the lead certified Mercury technician at Mr. Marine. “Even with our short season, I find a lot of impellers that are too worn at the tips to pump well, or are really stiff. We make changing the impeller part of our off-season lay-up program, because if it fails you can have much more expensive problems.”

The torn-up blades of this inboard impeller are not going to move much water.

“If they are running wide-open, by the time they hear that horn and react, they have a scuffed piston, especially if it’s a two-stroke motor,” said Jansen, “ And even if the motor is OK, now they are out in the middle of the lake and the day is shot, at the very least.” more

When the impeller fails, the pump can’t pump and the engine will overheat. I’ve seen old outboards that got so hot the paint burned off the powerhead. Most newer motors have a warning horn that sounds when the motor gets hot, and a program that cuts engine rpm to try and protect the powerhead, but Jansen thinks that often may be too little, too late. more
