There IS a right and wrong way to start and warm-up your dirt bike, and it isn’t any harder to do it correctly. This article will show you how to properly warm up your engine, whether it’s a 2 or 4 stroke, liquid cooled or air cooled.

Depending what the air temperature is, you should let your dirt bike idle for 1-3 minutes. During this time, I give the throttle a little flick, and it if still bogs or hick-ups then it’s not warm yet. If it revs like normal, then it’s time to put it in gear. here

Two-stroke motocross bikes have made a comeback in recent years. While many manufacturers have ceased producing current-model full-size two-stroke dirt bikes, companies such as KTM, Husqvarna, Yamaha, and TM still offer two-strokes in every new year model lineup. more

We can’t be the ones to answer that, but one thing is for sure, 2-strokes are making their comeback. They’re now present across all forms of riding and racing, which include Enduro, NHHA, Motocross (hobby, amateur, and professional levels), local enthusiasts, and Amateur MX.

As far as I know, the frame for the standard YZ series of bikes, cannot be registered as street legal. I may be incorrect, but from what I’ve gathered here you need to have a WR frame in order for the bike to be register-able. here

Do you even need to warm up 2 strokes? Chain-saws and such, people just fire them up and start using them. Whats the advanatage of actually warming up a 2 stroke engine? Since the oil is all right there, cant you just gas and go?

not a whole heck of a lot different..but the bikes by defenition "warming them up" is to allow the cylinder to expand with the faster expanding piston. as well the clutch oil (being a wet clutch system) also needs to move around a bit. when the trans is cold on a 2 smoke no matter how many times you pull the clutch in. nothing happens. the clutch plates are "static" with oil..untill the oil gets sloshed around a bit. the trans in basicaly stuck in gear [links]

On my little scoot (50cc 2 stroke) I usually just start it with the choke, let the choke off, blip the throttle alittle bit and take off. Would a motocross bike be any differant?

it dosnt take a lot to warm up a 2 stroke bike. just a few minutes of easy throttle. just to let everything expand here

In a worst-case scenario, the pistons will need to be replaced because of extensive damage. here

Because of this, manufacturers recommend that you operate your sled at lower speeds for the first couple of minutes. Keeping safety in mind, you may want to avoid hammering the throttle in the first 10-15 minutes. After this, all of the engine components will have warmed up properly, and you can operate your sled at faster speeds.

If there is no other way than storing it outside, you may want to cover it carefully. This way, you don’t have to dig your sled out before every ride.

If your sled isn’t equipped with this gauge, you can also check the temperature of the heat exchanger. If it’s warm to the touch, this usually means the engine has already warmed up. Unfortunately, you can’t apply this trick on fan-cooled engines.
