Roger’s Bare Foot Beach Bar is the only bar on Hog Island and is essentially a bamboo shack directly on the beach. Roger’s throws a party every Sunday, which is great because the rest of Grenada is very quiet on Sundays in comparison. The owner of this beach bar has been hauling beer and ice to the island for over 28 years. [links]

Hog Island is a somewhat isolated island, which means you can forget about the cabana boys coming to take your daiquiri order or any lifeguards on duty. However, there are some amenities available at the beach, such as barbeque pits, picnic tables, swings, and a hammock large enough for two people.

Visitors can enjoy a picnic or throw a barbeque since picnic tables and barbeque pits are already provided. These areas also offer an excellent opportunity to play a game of cards or just lime around and enjoy the beautiful scenery. here

For those tourists who are looking for something a little bit off the beaten path, you really can’t go wrong with Grenada as a whole. Just a stone’s throw off the shores of Grenada you’ll find Hog Island, a hidden gem that may take a bit of planning ahead to see, but it’s well worth the effort.

Those travelers looking to get to Hog Island have a few options available to them. The two primary choices are to take a water taxi or walk across the footbridge at Mt. Hartman. Vehicles are not permitted on the bridge.

Gorgeous trail, and very well marked. We hiked but saw several mountain bikers. Weather was cool and drizzly so pretty much had the hike to ourselves. Hiking poles were helpful. Amazing views at the top of Hog Heaven. Highly recommend. Took about 2 hours. We went counter clockwise.

This was our favorite trail by far! Absolutely beautiful and just enough of a challenge! We started on the broken arrow trail and that took us to hog wash.

From out of town and were taken aback by the amazing views throughout this trail! We got lost a couple of times because the trail was sometimes hard to find but we were able to find our way. We started a little after 8am and we’re able to find a parking spot easily, however when we returned around 10:30 the parking lot was completely full. We saw a few groups of other hikers and mountain bikers. Was a great hike!

The fountain shown in the cut can be placed so that the float chamber will not freeze. If the drinking trough is placed to face the south, little trouble will be encountered with freezing in this. A fountain like this built into the hog shed is very satisfactory. [links]

If the wallow can be located in the shade of a tree, the roof can be omit- ted, but if shade is not available, the roof should be built as shown. Wherever possible surface drainage should be provided as shown. Underground drains will soon clog up and fail to work.

WP 10 is on the northern moraine of the Marcus Land Slide, which came down from the hill above. Cross the valley to WP 12, where you begin your upward ascent. There is a little scrambling involved making your way through the boulders but keep looking for cairns (Please leave them where you find them. They are sanctioned as part of the climber access routes by the City and help keep folks from developing “use trails” that would degrade the environment.) more

The trail climbs up the ridge above the Thumbnail until dipping a short distance on the ridge's south side. It then ascends back to the ridgeline, moves through some boulders to the north side, and then switches back to the south through a notch with a short slippery slope beneath. Contour around the ridgeline crest again moving westward, and generally follow the ridgeline, occasionally passing obstacles on the south. A final venture on the south flank of the ridge and ascent back to the weather station/radio facility takes you to the top of East End, the highest point in the McDowell Mountains. Surveyors have placed multiple USGS markers on the summit rocks. On the accompanying route map, this area is indicated as WP 17. [links]

A larger adventure can take a left on the Tom’s Thumb trail past the East End Trail intersection, and then following the signed spur trail to Tom’s Thumb, continue past Tom’s Thumb itself, heading west along the ridgeline. A similar climber access route descends the west arm of Tom’s Thumb cirque past climbing areas Lost Wall and Fort McDowell to reconnect with the Tom’s Thumb Trail at TT3 emergency marker.

The following set of waypoints (WP 13 through 16) mark various climber access points of interest. Generally, you will hike up to the bottom of the 200 foot high Main Wall of Hog Heaven and then contour a little further south until under the Upper Wall above you on the broad ridgeline. Scramble and zig-zag uphill, staying on the cairned trail until you take a final scramble up and over some boulders below the right-hand end of the Upper Wall itself. The next phase of the ascent is to work right around the Upper Wall and then back to the south to pass on the east side of the Thumbnail (WP 16). Enjoy your ascent. The views are rewarding. [links]
