Hi Guys, Silvertip's analysis is excellent, and prompts another question from me. It would seem that Alian's boat has extra weight or maybe a mossy bottom that is causing some inefficiency, or maybe he has not found the "sweet spot" where the boat runs most efficiently, (as far as distance per gallon of fuel). I run a number of fairly lightweight boats in mostly fresh water, with less power and likely less weight then Alian's boat. I lack a flow meter and usually do not bother with GPS so my impressions are not strictly varifiable, and maybe false, (although I doubt it). I have found that speed and distance on my boats are not sprictly linear functions of how much throttle I give them. If I have a lot of weight in a boat, or I intentionally keep the boat just off step, (planing speed), or just barely on step, the various engines on various boats use much more fuel per distance traveled, then if I find the "sweet spot" at 2/3 to 3/4 throttle where the hull speed is still decent but the fuel consumption is far less. Silvertip's analysis would indicate that I would just use the same fuel for the same distance traveled which seems very different then my experience where running 10% slower at 25% less throttle saves roughly 25% less fuel used for only 10% less distance traveled. Am I dreaming? Thanks JR here

Or maybe is gallons per mile. 8)

Thanks a bunch Silvertip, That is a real eye opener! I would have guessed an approximate 15% savings but that is not very far (in absolute magnitude) from the 9% in your actual measured example, (not just a raw guess based on uncalibrated experience: as mine admittedly was). I love these forums, and the knowledge one can pick-up here. I think I will check out how much head ache a fuel flow moniter to duplicate your findings on one, (or if I could make it portable: more then one), of my old boat/motor combinations would be. Do you know where I would start, (all of my large kickers are fairly old inline 6s and the fuel is mixed, which may rule out a fuel flow monitor like you have). My power to weight ratios seem much more favorable on my high powered combinations then Alian's is, as my boats are faster then 43 MPH, and much faster then 21-23 MPH @ 3500 RPMs. As to Alian's set up; he still looks like he is burning 20%+ too much fuel and that could be costly on a 200HP kicker, so I still recommend he looks into the weight of the vessel. Thanks again JR [links]

I took my boat out today for the first time, i still need to fix the gas tank so i had to use those small red fuel tank the 6 gallon ones. I have a 200hp mercury. I knew it was going to drink lots of gas but not that much. In less than 10 miles it took more than 12 gallons.

But the bigger discrepancy comes on how much of the tank is “usable,” for lack of a better term: more

But do we really have that many miles?

Barefoot Gal has two 18-gallon diesel tanks. But we can’t put a full 18 gallons in each: more

Now we are talking about the offshore fishing vessels (like center consoles, etc.), not the small fishing boats like (Bass boats, Jon boats, etc.). Offshore imply harsh weather (choppy waters), which drastically increases fuel consumption and decreases mileage drastically. [links]

Bass boats are usually propelled by two means: an outboard motor, which moves the boat swiftly from place to place, and a trolling motor, which moves the boat at a slow pace through an area where the angler is fishing, giving more mileage. more

Generally, offshore fishing boats have at least one live baitwell, tackle centers, bait prep centers, fish boxes for safely storing the day’s catch, and rod holders for storage and strategically placed for trolling—higher gunwales to keep passengers safely on board. Most will have extensive electronics for fish finding, navigation, marking hot spots, and monitoring systems, including propulsion systems. One of the most important things to know about a boat is its mileage. Of course, the mpg (miles per gallon) of a boat can differ drastically and depends on many factors. In this article, we will walk you through how many miles per gallon a boat gets in general by looking at the mileages of popular boat models.

The most common vessels used by commercial and recreational boaters in North Carolina have planing hulls and are powered by two- or four-stroke gasoline engines. At full throttle and averaged across makes and models, those engines burn about one gallon of fuel per hour for every 10 horsepower (hp). Generally, it takes about 2.5 hp to plane 100 pounds for a near flat-bottomed boat. Other shapes, such as deep-v hulls, require more power. Further, if the boat drops off plane, the amount of horsepower required to get the boat back on plane will increase dramatically.

But don’t forget safety. Proper fuel planning also necessitates estimating a safe operating radius. Use this rule of thumb: “A third to get there, a third to get back and a third as a safety margin.”

Other ways to maintain fuel efficiency include adjusting vessel trim and traveling in favorable conditions. here

Some sailors would argue the more the better. And sure, it's tempting to rev up the engine once you reach 3 or 4 knots. Especially if you have a long way ahead of you. But more fuel means more weight means more fuel consumption. So what's the sweet spot?

As you can see, fuel use widely varies. There are a lot of factors that determine how much your engine actually burn. Some of them are:

I'll go into the different factors that affect fuel consumption below. But first, let's get some ballpark figures for different sailboat sizes.

Hull type and shape - The shape of the hull determines how much water it displaces. The bulkier the shape, the more water it has to push away, so the more fuel it uses. Also, multihulls displace a lot less water, making them way more efficient. You'll see when you drive a catamaran: it uses WAY less fuel. Flat bottom boats use even less (but are less appropriate for sailing). more

Whenever I dream about long passages, I always wonder how much fuel a sailboat uses. I want to know how much fuel I should bring to carry on. So I crunched the numbers and in this article I'll share my results with you.

Make sure your hull is clean. A clean and waxed hull really helps with reducing friction from the water, so it increases your mileage. [links]
