For the Sleeper, we provide a double mesh stainless steel screen to replace the pumice stone element in the stock flame arrestor case. In our tests, the popular K & N replacements performed well as long as they were perfectly dry. However when they became even a little wet, they offered very restricted air intake ability until they were removed and allowed to dry out. For our Hammer kits we recommend only the Westcoast velocity stack flame arrestor replacement. The intake mesh of this element is so high in the engine compartment that it is exposed to very little water spray. Whatever spray it may be exposed to will not clog the all screen element in any way. Boring the Westcoast stack to perfectly match the mouth of the 38 carb is available as an option.

AIR LEAKS - The lower end of your 440 should be totally air tight up to 8 psi. Newer engines pass this test with no problems. However engines with deteriorated crank seals or brittle intake gaskets can allow outside air to leak into the lower end during operation. This "air leak" can make the fuel mixture lean enough at high rpms to cause a piston seizure. Air leaks are by far the number one cause of watercraft piston seizures. GROUP K offers a simple to use pressure test kit that allows you to quickly test for, and locate, any air leaks that your engine may have. [links]

Determine the stator resistance range for your model Ski-Doo. This information is in your owner's manual.

The stator on the Ski-Doo is a stationary part of the engine, located near the spark plugs, that help create a spark in conjunction with the spark plugs that causes combustion in the gas engine. If your Ski-Doo will not start and the battery and spark plugs all check out OK, there's a chance the stator could be bad. The stator can be tested with a digital multimeter.

Power up the multimeter and turn the dial to the resistance setting. Touch the red meter lead to the positive stator wire, which may be white, blue or green. Place the tip of the negative meter lead to the negative, or black, stator wire. [links]

Some of you may have read my posts about the 550 engine trouble. I determined the spark was very weak (hard to see in a dark room) and intermittent, firing only once in a while. not everytime like it should.
Anyway, I took apart the engine and found my flywheel was cracked and broken somehow. I am working on getting that flywheel off, and getting a replacement on the way. but how do I test my stator to see if I need to replace that too while I am in there?

I assume the weak and intermittent spark was due to the broken flywheel, but what if the flywheel damaged the stator, or if the stator is also causing the weak and intermittent spark. some tech guru please tell me how to test, while I have the whole thing apart. [links]
Check another compression tester. And do it with the throttle wide open. here

That is actually stock compression. [links]

Is it completely stock or has there been changes? Carb? Dry out the cylinders, (crank it with no plugs and fuel line disconnected) Then spray sprits of starter fluid down the carb while cranking, see if you can get any life at all.

I poured a little bit of fuel into each cylinder and it is not firing at all. more

I have a js550 that is not starting. It's cranking good with a new starter.
