The Mediterranean Sea covers 2.5 million km² and as such there are countless harbours to choose to begin your sailing vacation from. Some specific harbours are worth mentioning to send you in the right direction for deciding your starting point. Porto Cervo on the Italian Island of Sardinia is a popular spot because of its destination and capacity. It can fit up to 700 boats including larger boats and is incredibly close to the famous beaches of Costa Smeralda Port de Saint-Tropez in Saint-Tropez on the French Riviera in France is another very popular location. Also accommodating over 700 boats, it is one of the larger harbours and you can expect to see superyachts here. Other notable harbours in the MEditerranean worth mentioning are ACI Marina Split, Ibiza Magna Lefkas Marina and Limassaol Marina.

Yacht charters in the Mediterranean vary considerably in boat type, length of time and price of the charter. For those who have a sailing license, bareboat charters are available and for those who don't then you can hire a yacht that comes with a skipper and even a crew. It is completely normal to hire a boat through Click&Boat that includes a captain to tour you through the waters and lots of our listings include added or optional extras too. From snorkelling and diving equipment to jet-skis and wakeboards.

The high-season in the Mediterranean typically runs from May to the end of August with July and August being by far the most popular and busy times of the year. With this in mind, it is often a good idea to avoid July and August and instead plan your trip for either side of the high-season. May and June or September and October are the best times to visit the Mediterranean because the weather is still sunny, the waters are warm and the crowds are fewer. For sailing specifically, Spring is the best as the waters are calmer but the sun is still shining. If we were to suggest one time of the year to take you sailing vacation it would be during May and June. [links]

The type of boat you hire will almost entirely depend on the type of holiday you want to have which will also affect what you will want to see in the Mediterranean. You might hire a catamaran to have a relaxed family holiday, a sailing boat to try something adventurous by sailing between islands or you could charter a yacht and spend your time swimming in secluded coves whilst living that luxurious life on-board your boat. If you are looking for spots of natural beauty then look no further than the Amalfi Coast of Italy. UNESCO named the Amalfi Coast an outstanding example of a mediterranean landscape. If you are looking for something more lively and fancy visiting some of the world’s most famous bars and clubs then I am sure you don’t need to be told twice to make a stop in Ibiza - famous for its lively nightlife and nightclubs. If you are someone who enjoys history and loves to learn about the history and culture of the places you are visiting then you are spoilt for choice with the mediterranean with places like Athens and Venice normally being top of the list.

With the survey, while there are excellent surveyors throughout the Mediterranean, it may make sense to pay the extra cost to fly one out from this UK. This will give the reassurance of having redress in UK law should anything go wrong. more

Many yachts, in the eastern Med especially, started their lives in charter fleets. These are also likely to be well-specified for sailing here, based on decades of experience of what works and what doesn't. While some of these boats will have had a hard start to their life, most are used for less than 100 days per year and are not as worn as might be expected and can often offer excellent value. However, a lot depends on the standard of maintenance at the bases at which the boat has been based. more

Charter guests would pay significantly more money to charter Lady Michelle, which is the yacht featured on Below Deck Mediterranean Season 6. Below Deck Mediterranean can provide a cost-effective way to take a yacht vacation as long as being filmed 24/7 is included in the plans. Charter guests pay significantly less money to be on the show. But their vacation typically lasts fewer days on the boat. They are also not afforded the privacy that many yacht vacationers desire, which includes rules imposed by production. Below Deck guests are also subject to social media ridicule and scrutiny too, so is the savings worth it?

Other yachts featured on the show are just as pricey. The Wellington from Below Deck Mediterranean Season 5 can set vacationers back about $270,000 per week. Below Deck yacht prices range from $140,000 per week to more than $300,000 per week. more

The production sheet shared with charter guests also touched on tip policy. “Additionally, the charter group is responsible for the cash tip which is typically 20% of the original, full price charter fee – not the discounted price,” according to the call sheet. “On average, the gratuity per charter has been between $15k to $20k and is solely at the discretion of the charter group and sky is the limit.” more
