While boat insurance may or may not be government-mandated, most people want boat insurance, whether they have to or not. Boat insurance can cost anywhere from $200-$600 or more depending on what kind of boat you own, how big it is, and what type of coverage you have.
Fuel is another cost many people don’t take into consideration. When you add up how much fuel you purchased over a year, it can be quite a big deal. They use much more fuel than most would expect. On average, a tank may hold 25 gallons. You may use 25 gallons every 1-4 hours out on the lake, depending on what you are doing. Factor that in with the number of days you plan to spend on the water, and you can come up with a semi-accurate, anticipated budget for fuel. here

One aspect of boat ownership to keep in mind is where you are going to keep it throughout the year. If you can’t keep it on your own property, you’re going to have to invest in mooring or some other form of storage. Mooring is where you keep your boat in the water attached to something that forces the boat to stay put. Storing it in the water somewhere can cost anywhere from $800-$1,800 per year. Kitty McGowan of the US Superyacht Association says that among the costs, you need to budget $400,000 for fuel, $350,000 for dockage, $240,000 for vessel insurance, $1 million for maintenance and repairs, and $1.4 million for crew salaries. All of these extras add up — from about $300 per year for cleaners and soaps to several hundred dollars on waxing the hull and treating fabric.

Overall, our month-to-month expenses add up to what it would cost to rent a 1 bedroom apartment. Gone are the days of paying thousands on the mortgage and all the stuff that goes with owning a house like electric, water, sewage, property taxes, HOA fees, cable TV and WiFi. We no longer feel like we’re in a rat race trying to keep up with the Joneses. It’s definitely a lot simpler way of life and we’ve really streamlined our budget. Since moving aboard, we’ve both been able to pay off our credit cards and I finally paid off my car (Randy has a company truck). Without all the bills from mortgage and car payments, we are finally out of debt and saving money. I should also note that Randy and I bought Blue Turtle outright. When researching boats, we looked into loans so we could purchase a more expensive boat but it was very difficult to find anyone who would lend to us. That, and most loan companies will only lend on terms of 10 year payoffs (not 30 like you would get with a house). We decided to go with a less expensive boat we could afford to pay cash for. This has saved us—not having to pay a monthly mortgage on a boat has given us the extra money to pay off debt and save for maintenance and repairs.
Steer clear from any second-grade knockoff parts that have flooded the boat market these days. They may be much cheaper, but they barely work.
Right off the bat, boat insurance isn’t compulsory, but we would highly recommend it. Unless you own a private lake, then there’s a chance you may get into an accident. In 2017, for instance, there were about 4290 boat accidents , with 698 deaths. more
