Modern-era simulants include enamel, glass, plastic, and a variety of dyed gems such as howlite and jasper, which is misleadingly referred to as “Swiss lapis.” [links]

The use of lapis lazuli for art and jewelry probably originated in Afghanistan and spread to Asia, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and the Roman world. Many of the gemstones referred to as sapphire or sapphirus, “blue stone,” in the Latin-speaking world of classical antiquity may have actually been pieces of lapis lazuli. more

Lapis lazuli has been used since ancient times and remains popular today. This gemstone has been prized for its bright, blue color and used for inlay and intarsia as well as for pigments for cosmetics and paintings. Its contrast and eye appeal is irresistible. Today, jewelry is its predominant use.

It’s not surprising that a stone whose popularity has extended across continents and millennia can reach new markets. Denim and country-western clothing have opened a niche for what once was considered low-quality, virtually unsalable material from Chile. Cleverly dubbed “denim lapis” now sells very well. more

Polish quality and faceting artistry also affect value.

If a medal is gilded with publicity as well as the standard six or more grams of gold, the value equation is completely different, and auction prices can shoot through the roof. The only remaining medal of the original four won by Jesse Owens in 1936 sold for $1.47 million in 2013. One of the "Miracle on Ice" medals from the 1980 Team USA hockey team was expected to fetch $1.5 to 2 million, but it failed to sell at auction earlier this summer. here

There is a wide variance in what medals sell for at auction. Boston-based RR Auction, which has sold many gold medals, told USA Today that an average price for a "common" gold medal—think archery or water polo, with no well-known athlete's name attached—is about $10,000. Rarer, older medals can easily sell for much more. Browsing through RR Auction's archives, there's a January 2016 sale that included four gold medals, with prices from $47,746.83 for a gold from Chamonix 1924 to $10,114.83 for a Melbourne 1956 gold. here

Another way to look at the value of a gold medal is how much it costs the participant just to have a chance at winning one. Olympic Hollywood fairytales are often big budget affairs. Specialized skills mean specialized training, coaching, and equipment—all of which can be enormously expensive. here

Just as there's a wide spectrum for a medal loaded with history versus one earned in an overlooked skeet shooting competition, the prestige a medal bestows upon the winner depends on the sport and the back story of the event and its participants. A gold medal in a popular sport can mean million-dollar endorsements deals, commentating gigs, and more. But sports without vibrant business models and followings will prevent a gold medal from earning much beyond fame in a small niche community.

For example, gold prices were stable and almost unchanged during the 19th century. Believe it or not, they fluctuated only from $18.93 to $18.98 during 45 years.

This investment is attractive because of the possibility that customers don’t pay the entire amount. Instead, the agreement between buyer and seller includes gold spot price and its weight within the delivery month.

Luckily, you can quickly convert avoirdupois ounces to troy ounces by multiplying it with 0.91. However, the best option is to buy precious metals with engraved weight and purity or government minted products with a guaranteed weight in troy ounces. more

Now, the price of gold bars is not exclusively determined by the spot price. In fact, it is exceedingly rare for a bullion dealer to have gold bars available at spot price. Every gold bar will have some sort of premium on top of the inherent value of the gold they contain. Depending on the dealer and the mint of the bars, these premiums can vary wildly. I will talk about the latter later in this post.

Gram gold bars will have much higher premiums compared to larger sized bars because they have similar minting costs to the larger sizes but have less gold content more
