100 is the number of yards or meters for the above swim. The De Anza pool is 25 yards wide by 50 meters long. For most swim classes the lane lines are put in along the width, so if you swam over and back (across to the other side and back) four times you would swim a 100.

The only real way you know your swim time is to test yourself. It is good to know how long it takes to swim 500 yards, which is 10 laps (a lap is down and back) or 20 lengths.

Absolutely. As others have pointed out, the men’s world record for swimming 100 meters is 46.91, but just 9.58 for running. Realistically, a more equivalent track event would be the 400 meters (WR of 43.18). But it’s not just that swimming 100 meters takes longer than running 100 meters that makes it harder.

It depends on your skill. A new swimmer may struggle doing so, and a lot of them couldn’t make it without stopping in the middle. An intermediate swimmer would probably take about four to five minutes, while a trained swimmer could take less than three.

The following chart is a great reference tool for any swimmer. The chart provides general paces in minutes and seconds for set distances from 100 yards (or meters) to a one-hour swim. To use the chart, select a shorter distance (such as 100 yards or meters) and time yourself in a moderately paced swim. Record your time, and use this as a base for swims of longer distances.

For example, a swimmer does 100 yards comfortably in 2:00. Theoretically, this swimmer should be able to do a 200 in 4:00, a 300 in 6:00, etc. If you find you cannot maintain your pace for longer swims, try a modified pace.

This chart is also useful for swimmers who want to do repeats using interval training. One example is five repeats of 100 yards (or 5 x 100's). If you can swim 100 yards comfortably in 1:45 with no rest, you might want to add 10 or 15 seconds rest and do the set of 100's on an interval of 1:55 or 2:00. This interval will allow you to complete the swim, plus get enough rest time to catch your breath before continuing. Repeat interval training is a great way to work toward swimming at a faster pace, which could ultimately benefit your level of fitness. [links]

Short Course Yards: One length is 25 yards long. This is what you will typically see in most age group, high school, and regular season college meets (at least in the United States). You will sometimes see it abbreviated as SCY.

Long Course Meters: One length equals 50 meters. This is what you see in the Olympics. It is also what USA and some YMCA swimmers swim in during the summer. On the other hand most rec teams still compete in short course pools in the summer. You can’t miss these long course pools, they are of course roughly double the length of a short course pool. Again these times will be slower compared to yard pools. You’ll often see the abbreviation LCM when taking about this type of pool. [links]

Long course pools are also known as Olympic distance pools. These pools are 50 meters in length and can be found indoors and outdoors. In the United States, these pools are difficult to find due to their size and limited functionality. Long course pools require fewer turns to swim an identical distance than in a short course pool. This lack of turns will cause your times to be slower in long course pools. The 50 meter distance can help improve your stroke as you can focus on your technique longer without having to worry about doing a turn.

Short course pools are the counterpart to long course pools. These pools are more common and can be either 25 yards or 25 meters. A 25-yard pool will be referred to as short course yards while the 25-meter pool is referred to as short course meters. Internationally, a meter measured pool is the standard, while in the United States you will find that most pools are 25-yard pools. Therefore, when you swim 100 yards in a 25-yard pool, you are swimming a shorter distance than a 100-meter swim and thus your time will be faster.

If you are training to swim a race in one type of pool but only have access to the other, you can alter your workouts accordingly. For example, if you are training for a 200-meter long course race, you can swim sets of 250 short course yard swims to adjust for the distance. In short course pools there is an emphasis on turns, and thus you may want to include core body exercises to assist with the added turns. [links]
