In the space pioneered by venerable players such as NetJets and XO, nimble newcomers are redefining what we’ll call affordable private jet luxury. You no longer have to pay thousands of dollars; all you need is an app, a few hundred bucks and, often, a tolerance for tiny aircraft. more

Once upon a time, wealthy people bought their own planes. Later, other rich people realized they could buy shares in a jet instead of owning one. Today, alternatives to commercial air travel are entering the Uber age, making airplane travel an on-demand perk as accessible — and sometimes almost as affordable — as ordering up a car. more

The newer players are capitalizing on three trends. First, cautious travelers are seeking ways to avoid crowded airport terminals and pressurized aircraft cabins following the coronavirus outbreak. Second, airlines are pulling back from less-profitable routes to smaller airports, complicating commercial travel to second-tier destinations. And third, elite flyers who typically travel business class are getting fed up with flying commercial. Security lines have grown significantly pre-coronavirus, legroom is shrinking and personal device holders are replacing in-flight entertainment screens. here

The latest wave of growth is just the beginning. “The private jet industry is currently booming,” says Andres Morales, executive vice president of global operations for the aviation consultation company Skyline Group MC. “With more companies and individuals buying private aircraft, more jets are flying under capacity, so they look for different ways to offset their cost of ownership. That has resulted in an increase in the accessibility to flying private through different digital platforms that connect the consumer to a private aircraft.” here

That said, Davis says DPJ had over 6,300 empty legs in the past year, so 526 per month if you are counting. Lastly, we compared the Sky Access hourly rates versus the entry-level $100,000 DPJ Jet Card and found the amount of difference varied across jet size categories. For example, a Delta Private Jets’ Light Jet 100k card brings an hourly rate of $5,690 including 7.5% Federal Excise Tax (FET) compared to $5,995 for Sky Access, or a premium of 5.4% for the new program. With Mid-Size jets, the 100k Jet Card is priced at $7,290 per hour vs. Sky Access at $7,950, a 9.1% premium for the new pay as you go membership program. For the popular Super-Mid category, the variance was $9,650 vs. $10,995 per hour, a 14% premium. For Large Cabin jets, the difference is $13,990 per hour for a 100k DPJ Jet Card vs. $14,400 for Sky Access, so only a 3% premium. However, at the $1 million level, there is a significant difference, to $12,590 per hour, or a 14% premium if you opt for Sky Access. here

Another benefit you don’t get with Sky Access is Delta Diamond Medallion status, something that might be valuable if you fly commercially on routes well served by Delta Air Lines. here

For a weekend in the Hamptons, consider a private jet charter turboprop like the Piper Aztec . This popular commuter plane costs around $2,900 to fly from New York to Montauk, while a 40-minute flight from Montauk to White Plains comes in at a private jet rental cost of around $2,800 aboard a Piper Seneca .

For example, a long-haul flight from New York to London is best suited to a heavy jet like the Gulfstream G550 . The ultra-long-range private jet (which has set over 40 city-pair records for time), combines incredible speed and range with excellent interior features. Its luxurious interior offers four distinct areas for up to 16 passengers, and it offers impressive multimedia resources for onboard entertainment and connectivity. [links]

If you’re on the “Forbes Richest” list or an A-list celebrity, your next few paychecks should cover your own private jet – the new Cessna CJ4 is going for about $9 million. Pocket change, right? But for the majority of travelers, a private jet rental is a better option. Private jet charter offers all the benefits of owning a private jet without the hefty price tag and the hassle of continual maintenance.
