What Color Should Lower Unit Gear Oil Be? Brand new gear oil should be a shade of blue, green, brown, or yellow, depending on the brand. Used gear oil should be a black/dark variation of the brand new color. Knowing what these colors mean and also the other colors you will encounter is important.
The black color in the gear lube is from the wear of the gears, bearings and mating surfaces of moving parts in the unit. The amount of metal in the lube (not chips or slivers, that’s different) wll increase depnding on the load/use or the fit of the parts in the unit.
So, can you use any old gear lube in your marine lower unit? If you want the best protection possible, and want your lower unit to last as long as your boat, then the answer is no. Consult your engine’s manual and look for the proper marine gear lube for your application.
Allow the car to cool - Let the vehicle cool down before attempting to check the oil.
Note: If you feel any particles in the oil, this could indicate damage to the engine, so you should have a certified mechanic inspect the car as soon as possible.
Warning: Never check the oil when the engine is hot. It is best to check the oil in the morning before the car has run, as all of the oil will have run back down into the oil pan. If this is not an option, let the car cool down for at least 10 minutes.
Do you need an oil change and you’re worried about having to delay it? Many things can go wrong with your automobile–brakes wear out, transmissions need replacing, and sooner or later you’ll face having to deal with replacing your muffler, fuel filter, getting your air conditioning recharged, etc. Some things are normal wear and tear on the vehicle, and other things may be the result of defective parts, accidents, unexpected electronics failure, etc.
Clean oil makes your engine run more efficiently. In turn, this saves you money on the backend allowing you to travel longer. After all those miles on the open road, your engine collects sediment; most of that sediment settles in your oil.
This may be due to multiple variables including whether you are using synthetic oil or not, the quality of the oil, and other factors. It’s not a good thing to take a chance on, however–how much did you pay for your car? Compare that to the price of an oil change and it becomes clear very quickly why you should spend the money.
