Start with the shift cable. With the gearbox in neutral, and the helm in neutral you will insert the cable into the lower cowling, then place the barrel nut into its hole. The end of the cable should slide over the pin on the end of the shaft shaft easily. If not, adjust the barrel nut accordingly and try again. There should be a cover nut to hold that in place when you're done.

I just bought a Thunderbolt 500 50hp outboard. The guy i bought it from had all the controls connected and we disconnected everything so I could bring it home. That being a few weeks ago, I have NO idea of how to reconnect the throttle/shift control cables. Any help would be appreciated! Thich cable is the throttle and which one is for shifting? [links]
Next come s the throttle cable. With the controls in neutral and the throttle arm at the motor against the idle stop, you want to insert the throttle cable into the motor and adjust the barrel so that the cable applied a bit of pressure holding the throttle arm against the stop. Idea here is that you should be able to hold a piece of paper between the throttle arm and its stop, but not be so tight that the paper tears when you try to remove it.

Hard to explain this in text, but I'll try.

First cable to move when you advance the throttle is the SHIFT cable. You want it to shift into gear before the throttle is applied.

One may also ask, how does a boat throttle control work? The throttle control is a lever that can be pressed forward to increase the speed of the boat. When the throttle level is pushed forward, it opens the engine throttle in the outboard, which means that more air and fuel is being allowed into the combustion chamber at a higher rate of frequency.

Keeping this in view, how do you lubricate a boat throttle cable?

Re: How to adjust throttle cable engagement?
I need to find a way that will allow me to have the butterflies in the carbs completely closed at idle, and close to completely open at full throttle. Right now I have it so that they are completely closed at idle, which allows for an easy start. However, this arrangement does not allow them to open fully at full throttle.

I received the new cam roller shaft and will install that later today and see if I gain any range of motion. [links]
I need to re-evaluate my desire to adjust the sensitivity of the throttle to the throttle lever position. It appears that there is not enough range in the throttle linkage to allow the carbs to go from fully closed to near fully open. However, if the timing tree is going from idle to fully advanced, this is probably not a problem with the throttle lever control. So maybe I am barking up the wrong tree. here

If you're unable to regulate your boat's speed effectively, you can end up in a tight situation quickly. One of the problems with regulating your boat's speed might be loose, ineffective throttle control, sometimes called "slop." If you find that you've got "slop" in your throttle cable, you probably need to adjust the cable so that you have firm control over your boat's throttle setting and speed.

Pull the throttle cable to its attachment point on the throttle. Adjust the cable by moving it until it lines up exactly with the attachment point.

Inspect the throttle cable and sheath to be sure that the and sheath are anchored securely throughout their length. Sloppiness in the cable may result from the sheath coming loose and flexing, thus limiting the cable travel. Re-anchor the cable and sheath in its proper location if necessary. Use a screwdriver, pliers or a wrench, depending on the type of connection, to disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle. Move the throttle into the neutral position. [links]
Connect the cable to the attachment point on the throttle linkage without moving the throttle. The type of connection will vary according to your boat. here
