It’s always a big advantage if you can use any key with any of your sleds! However, having a spare key doesn’t hurt! [links]
To bypass a snowmobile key, open the hood and unplug the ignition switch. It’s very important that you not try connecting the removed cables together! Just unplug the wires and try to pull-start your sled.
For newer sleds, it’s usually harder to get a new ignition key, as more and more models come with unique keys.
As you can assume, the solutions get more expensive and difficult as you move down the list. Also, keep in mind that your options strongly depend on your sled’s make and year. What works on one doesn’t work on the other!
How do you bypass a snowmobile key?
You can start vintage Ski-Doo models without a key if you unplug the wires from the ignition switch. On the other hand, newer Ski-Doos with DESS have to be taken to a dealership for a new key. here

This product would be a great addition to any rental ski fleet as well as a great part to utilize if youre far from a dealer which makes it difficult to obtain a new lanyard. It of course works great for any individual Sea Doo owner as well. It does have its obvious security concerns but if you dont make it public knowledge that any lanyard will work, you should be ok.

It has annoyed me for quite some time that I had to keep lanyards straight and actually have got all the way to the lake before and found I brought the wrong lanyard! I then came up with this handy little adapter that allows any dess lanyard to work on a dess equipped ski. This is accomplished by simply plugging the SeaDooSource DESS Adapter into the dess post harness and popping any dess lanyard on. Even a magnet held close to the dess post will allow the ski to run in an emergency! The adapter does initially have to be programmed to the skis mpem by me or a dealer but once done, its ready to be installed. If you ever want to go back to the original oem setup, all you do is remove the adapter from the harness and youre back to original.
When utilizing one of these units, you also have the added benefit I that when the lanyard gets close to the post, you get the two beeps so it effectively makes restarting the ski when you're getting on a quicker process. That would be a benefit if you race with the oem mpem or just want to get going quick since it cuts a second or so off the start process.
Note at this time that although I can bench program #1 and #2 to your mpem for free if you send it in to me, I can only program #3 to a complete running ski thats present (cant bench program the mpem) so if you want that one, you would need to be near Mansfield, Ohio to get that done. I also cant program one to a DI ski at this time but am working on that as well. Im also working on a simple way for a dealer to program all of my adapters but theres no guarantee your local dealer would program one since it wasnt purchased from them and its not an oem Sea Doo product. Once I get these details finalized, Ill update this page. here
I was going to wire in kill switches etc for all the various basic functions, but the DESS cord unit is a headache.. is there anyway to bypass it? I was looking at a wiring schematic briefly at the dealer, I think the dess cord circuit showed a certain resistance there like 50 ohms or something like that (could be mistaken) .. is there any way of wiring in a resistor there to replace the tether circuit and make it work without buying all the odds and ends from the 'doo dealer? Bought a 600 skidoo motor off ebay last summer out of a '08 500 SS. It came with the engine wiring harness ECU etc, but lacks the dess cord unit and the rest of the chassis wiring harness beyond what the is included in the basic engine wiring harness.
I realize I could buy all the skidoo parts.. DESS pigtail wiring harnesses, tether etc.. and get the ECU reflashed for the new tether but is there any other options out there other than this?
