I would assume that a multiviscosity oil would be in order, given the temperature extremes that a lot of OB engines encounter, like 5 or 10W-30.
Need to change the oil and don't have the owners manual. it's an '06.
2) What type and weight oil??
Questions:
1) How much oil with new filter.
If you have a dipstick, most 4 cycle engine mfgrs. specify the correct level by following the reading on that regardless of "the oil capacity". I like to introduce new oil into the new filter prior to installation, like half full or so, fill the engines to the F mark on the dipstick, crank and run for a minute or two, shut off, wait 5 minutes or so and then top them off at the F mark. more
Re: 40hp 4 stroke. how much engine oil??
Ran it at the prescribed speed profile for two hours , pulled the boat and went home. After about an hour I decided to check the oil, and it poured out of the dipstick hole. It was overfilled. I removed about 6oz of oil back to the fill line, besides what was spilled from the motor. [links]
I have a brand new 2012 25hp Mercury Four Stroke outboard. I was performing the break-in as outlined in the manual, and everything appeared to have gone well. more
One interesting item, when the marina installed the motor and we were going through the first start-up, it blew oil out the same way, probably at least 6oz. It was not "refilled" at that time. here
There was an old post regarding this, but the oil Q wasn't answered.
Q1: Has the motor been compromised in any way due to running it with an overfill?
Q2: What should I look for, as far as other issues caused by the overfill?
Q3: Is it a known practice that unscrupulous marinas would overfill to get "work"?
