I put my water ears on and started up the engine. Engine started right up believe it or not (thank goodness for STA-BIL)! However, no water is coming out of the little hole. I didn't want to let the engine run more than 30 seconds. So I assume the water impeller needs to be changed. I looked all over the internet and can't find too much on the specifics on changing on this exact model. I have never done this before. Side note, the local boat shop replaced the impeller about 4 years ago. Only used it the one year..

My boat has been sitting for about three years. Just now found time to pull it out.

I have done my reading and I think I need to learn to do this versus taking it to the shop. Is it as simple as taking off the four bolts and dropping the lower unit? Do I need to have the gear in neutral? Any pointers will be appreciated. Let me know if I am going in the wrong direction here.

Yes, there were 5 bolts to fool with including taking off the little trim tab! here

Locate and remove the four screws holding the impeller housing onto the lower motor housing. Slide the impeller housing up over the driveshaft and pull the impeller out of the housing to examine it. If the impeller blades do not spring back into position easily or show wear and cracks in the rubber, you will need to replace it with the new impeller from your water pump kit. more

Remove the gaskets from the impeller housing. There will be three working in unison: rubber, metal, rubber. Put a small dab of motor oil on the rim of the impeller housing and on each of the gaskets. Slide the impeller over the driveshaft, followed by the impeller housing.

Locate the bolts holding the lower motor housing to the upper motor housing on your Mercury motor. There should be about five total, four easily visible on the bottom of the housing, with a fifth located under the small metal cap at the base of the prop tail. Remove the bolts and store them somewhere you can easily find them later.

Outboard motors are popular among motorboat enthusiasts because they are fuel efficient, easy to maintain and virtually problem-free. However, there are parts, such as the water pump, that will need to be replaced due to normal wear and tear. Water pumps keep the engine internals cool by circulating water through channels in each of the engine's components, which transfers heat away from the vital internal components. As water pumps are constantly running when the motor is running, it is common for these particular parts to wear out just from use. However, replacing the water pump is a fairly simple process and can be completed by even a novice mechanic.

Pull the entire lower motor housing away from the upper housing with the help of a friend. Pull slowly and remember to disconnect the wiring connections located within the upper housing before pulling the two housings completely apart. Place the bottom housing firmly in the motor stand.

Bolt the pump housing in place, tightening the bolts to 60 inch-pounds of torque, using a torque wrench. Spread a small amount of gasket compound onto the water tube stub on top of the pump housing and press the water tube connector onto the housing. [links]

Replace the upper two lower unit bolts in the order in which they were removed. Place the nuts onto the bolts and ensure the water tube connector has engaged the water tube. Install the remaining nuts and bolts (except the bolt that goes under the trim tab) that hold the lower unit to the engine and tighten to them 35 foot-pounds.

Shift the engine into forward gear. Tilt the motor up, using its trim-tilt system. This gives you room to remove the lower unit, the bottom part of the motor. You won't have to bend over to remove the unit and you'll have room for a second person to support it during removal. Open the vise on your workbench and pad its jaws with a thick towel to avoid scratching the paint on the lower unit.

Remove the pump's impeller. As you do so, a small, square piece of metal, called a Woodruff key, will fall from the driveshaft; this is the key that holds the impeller to the driveshaft. Save the key and open the pump replacement kit. Lay the kit's contents out on the workbench. here

Slide the lower unit straight away from the outboard. The water tube, which moves water from the water pump to the rest of the motor, will pull loose from the top of the pump housing on the top of the lower unit. Move the lower unit to the workbench. Place the unit into the vice so the drive shaft and shift rod point straight up. Tighten the jaws of the vice sufficiently to prevent the lower unit from moving. more

Remove only the parts of the pump that are included in the replacement kit. Use a paint scraper to clean any bits of gasket from the top of the lower unit. Use a marine gasket compound, such as Mercury's Perfect Seal, to attach the gaskets from the kit to the lower unit. [links]

Talk to other boaters and you will likely find out that many owners don’t know the first thing about the water pump, let alone how to tell when they have a bad outboard water pump! Yet, this vital component must be serviced regularly to maintain the longevity of your outboard.

A bad outboard water pump will produce lower water pressure than normal. The outboard can stop pumping water out the tell-tale, begin to overheat, restrict the available RPM allowed, and cause significant damage if not corrected.

Use some of the gasket sealing compound and lower your gasket into place. Make sure every hole is properly lined up.
