IMPORTANT: Do not overfill. Tilt outboard out/up past vertical for approximately one minute to allow trapped oil to drain back to the oil sump. Tilt outboard vertical (not tilted) position when checking engine oil. For accurate readings, check oil only when engine is cold or after engine has not run for at least an hour.

  1. Before starting (cold engine) tilt outboard out/up past vertical to allow trapped oil to drain back to oil sump. Allow outboard to remain tilted for approximately one minute.

IMPORTANT: Do not try to fill the oil level to the top of the operating range (cross hatched region). Oil level is correct as long as it appears in the operating range (cross hatched region).

Whether you use a synthetic blend or regular oil, checking your car when it is freezing outside will affect your readings. To get the best oil readings in single-digit weather, you may need to run your engine for a little while before starting the process. You can set your car on idle until it warms up, let it stand for 10 minutes, and then check your oil level. here

Taking care of your car’s engine oil is some of the most important knowledge to have to make sure that your car is in good shape and reduces the risks of expensive repair costs.

First, you should make sure that your car is on level ground. Checking your oil on an uneven surface could cause the readings to be flawed. [links]

Synthetic oil has a higher rate of expansion and contraction with temperature changes. These blends will be much tighter when cold and could expand even more than expected when hot. more

There are a lot of strange things that you didn’t know you needed knowledge about before you purchased your first car.

I have always warmed the boat up to operating temp, let it rest for 15 and then check. Add oil if needed and wait 15 mins and re-check.

letting the oil warm exchanges and recharges hydraulic lifters- one thought would be the oil contaminants get mixed up so warming is better. another says the lifters have bled down and the sump won't be fuller than it is right then. [links]

there is really no need to warm it. not when just 'checking'. changing? yeah- simply because it pours better. but even then i'll pull the plug (thank God for the hose kits that extend through the transom) and drain just a second- to check for water.
