A compression, 'n leak-down test tells ya a 'ell of alot more 'bout the motors overall health, than an hour meter.

I've seen 100 hour junk motors, 'n mine is 'bout to click 2,000 hours, 'n is darn near as solid as the day I built it. more

The engine has the Thunderbolt V ignition. Not sure if that module saves any data such as hours.

I'll have to check out the RS Components hour meter. I currently use a Tiny Tach on my old Evinrude 15hp outboard. That seems to work well and it uses a wire that you wrap around one of the spark plug wires. [links]

This concept can also be applied when talking about shutting one engine down and running on only one or two while trolling or at slow speeds.

I understand that in some places there is nothing but ethanol fuel available. Obviously non-ethanol fuel is more expensive and isn’t always available.

Isn’t there just a standard number, like is 2,500 hours too many or is it still worth buying a used engine or continuing to run the engine? Or is that too many hours?

Adding a little bit of trim into the engines while underway will also help in the performance and efficiency department.

Hopefully, this article has given you some good food for thought about getting more hours out of your boat’s engine!

When the gears are spinning at 5000 rotations per minute and you slam them into each other going the opposite way. That is how they explode! [links]

A motor wears out from running it. Your not going to wear a motor out running it 69 hours a year. You will not own the motor that long. At your present rate of usage, it will be another 19 years, your motor will be 32 years old, before you match the number of hours I had on 14 YRO Evinrude.

Well, I guess you have to consider corrosion just another type of wear. I was mostly thinking of warn out pistons, rings, cranks, rods, bearings, etc. The life of a freshwater motor would have to be at least double that of a saltwater motor? Good luck with your new power head! more

I had a 200 Hp Evinrude that was 2 years older than your 90C that had 2,260 documented hours on it. The compression was getting low. Starting to blowing a lot of fuel past the rings. The water passage where so worn you could not keep head gaskets on it for more than a season. Didn't know what was going to let go first, the heads or the rings. You know what? It didn't run fine. I liked this post: "Not exactly sure how many is on mine but my brother in law is a commercial crabber and 2 years ago he had his 06 Yamaha F150 in the shop getting a fuel pump put on it and the plugged up to get the hours and he had right at 9000 hours on it. That isn't a typo by the way." more

The other thing you need to remember is that very few if any FW outboards get run like they do in SW. When was the last time you ran your 90 at 4400 rpm for 1-2 hours straight, then trolled for 6-8 hours followed by another 1-2 hours 4400rpm?

Many boats are equipped with a hour meter that tracks of how many hours the motor has been used. While this knowledge may not seem useful, knowing the estimated usage of an outboard boat motor is important in determining if the motor needs maintenance. Wear and tear occurs inside the motor carriage when the motor is used for many hours without maintenance. Therefore, knowing how many hours an engine has been used is crucial in understanding more about your outboard motor.

Contact the previous owner of the boat if possible to see if the hour meter was installed after the boat was purchased or if it came with the boat. Sometimes the owner's manual has this information. If the meter has been on the boat since production, the reading is accurate. more

Conduct a compression test on the engine. The test, which can be completed by a marine mechanic, determines the amount of wear the engine has endured. While the number of hours cannot be determined by a compression test, an estimate of the runtime can be calculated from the wear the engine has endured. A well-worn engine has seen more hours of use than a less stressed motor. [links]
