Re: How do I check my transom?
I have a 1971 Glastron 164 with a Volvo Penta 270 outdrive and a 4 cyl. motor. The deck rotted where the engine cover mounts to it. The stringers also rotted on the top. The bottom of the stringers is fine. The deck is only rotted about a foot out from the engine cover and on both sides back to the transom. I pulled the rotted section of the starboard stringer and noticed on the transom there is a spot about the size of a silver dollar that didn't have any fiberglass on it and the wood is soft. How do I check the rest of the transom. I don't want to replace the whole floor just the bad section same with the stringers. If there is a way to do this please advise. I know the best way is to replace the whole floor. The only problem I have with this is the rest is not bad, same with the stringers. I just want to make the boat safe.
Pictures of stringers and transom. Hmmm I can't seem to make the pictures small enough to upload. How is everyone else doing it? here

other than that, i'd wait on Micheal Bristow from North Texas Fiberglass to chine in and give his opinion. He's the best glass guy around.
push down on the cavitation plate and look for stress cracks, or excessive movement!
i've known of guys that will stand on the cavitation plate and bounce the engine. if you do that remove the prop, so that when you fall off you won't cut your foot on the prop. (seen that done) here
be sure to remove the transom saver. [links]
course you could just take the boat to him and he'll inspect it for free.

That's the effect of rotted wood, that has gone beyond being just wet wood. It is always wet first, then gradually weakens over time. more
If the member didn't have any water come when he pulls the engine bolts, or the few holes he already drilled, or any of the existing holes already drilled in the inner side he can unscrew to check for wetness, my bet he is ok for many years to come. Once the bolts are out, he can also ice pick the wood in the holes to see if it penetrates, it should not, he can then seal that cap properly under the trim or hire someone to do it properly.
When you drill through the glass skin on the inner transom , its about 1/8 to 3/16 inch thick and very strong, it's glass! When you drill past it and the drill keeps going like it's butter back there, then it is butter! more
